Ratings: Novak Djokovic won his 9th AO title, wrapping a complex season challenged by COVID-19 restrictions.

1.17m metro viewers watched Novak Djokovic thrash Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open Men’s Final last night, making it the #1 show.

The match wrapped up a complex event that was challenged by COVID-19 restrictions, quarantine, crowd limits or bans, and a delayed season. But the Men’s Final was also down on 2020’s 1.52m when it screened against an I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here finale and a My Kitchen Rules season premiere.

  1. The match went so quickly that channel 9 ended up replaying some of the women’s final after Djokovic had been interviewed by the channel 9 team. Don’t remember seeing that before.

  2. Before the tournament started, I thought that AO would provide a good start. As i looked through the ratings, the audience nos were down from last year. There have been a lot of one-sided matches during the tournament. I even noticed that this year’s AO there were no Boys and Girls singles/doubles matches. I think it’s got to do with the cancellation of the boys/girls matches due to ongoing COVID-19.
I believe that the streaming numbers were down from last year.

  3. It was decent numbers for the final considering where everything else is sitting this year in terms of ratings so far however i must say i didn’t watch the final. I’m an avid tennis nut but i don’t like either player for reasons. Plus i found the commentators this year to be even more annoying than usual. It’s just been a different vibe this year.

  4. What’s new, everyone unloading on the tennis, one year it’s sky high, the next it’s low. Readers here on TVT were expressing their views in the hundreds over a decade ago (think there was an article in 2010) with everything from “delayed telecast in Queensland and Wa” to “get rid of Tracy Austin!” Hilarious.

  5. I found the tennis commentators this year annoying. They just went on and on and on even when a point was being played a lot of times. I still like Jim Courier though and his after match interviews.

  6. The first set was great, but towards the end of the 2nd it was obvious who was going to win. I was bored so we switched away. Same for the womens final, I didn’t even watch it, there was no way Naomi would lose. The only 2 full matches I watched were Serena v Simona & Naomi v Serena….

  7. Going into it, i thought this year the AO would get a rating boost, less people on holiday, and more people at work/school settled into viewing habits. But as the tournament went on, i’m not surprised it was a flop, i struggled to get into it. Didn’t have the same vibe as previous years, didn’t feel like there were any interesting storylines developing, or champions to get behind. And there was a lot of bad luck with one sided matches, including both finals.

    1. My favourite day was the women’s fourth round day session of Muguruza v Osaka followed by Sabalenka v S. Williams. Brilliant tennis from both matches.
