Superman & Lois

From Superman to Superdad, Tyler Hoechlin is a new age hero, underlining action with emotion.

There are all kinds of visual nods to Superman 1978 in Superman & Lois, when Christopher Reeve made the world believe a man could really fly.

But fast forward to Metropolis 2021 and Superman is now a Super-dad, married to Lois and father to two teens, and who answers the bat-call alarm of his Army general father-in-law. Are you keeping up?

Clark Kent’s (Tyler Hoechlin) identity is known to a handful of family, principally journalist Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) and her dad Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh). But neither of his teenage sons, for their own protection, know his true story. They include perfect teen Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) and rebellious brother Jordan (Alexander Garfin), who also has social anxiety disorder.

But Superdad -who still isn’t recognisable with his spectacles on despite his telltale 5:00 shadow- is full of emotion, for his growing sons and ailing mother, who draws him back to Smallville.

There he reunites with former high schooler Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui), now married to cynical Kyle (Erik Valdez). As it happens they have a wild child teen daughter Sarah (Inde Navarrette) … the apple of which brother’s eye?

As the plot unfolds questions are raised over father having passed on super-powers to his sons, apparently a late blooming talent in this universe.

There’s more drama than action in this pilot, but it lays a good foundation for caring about the characters and hunky Tyler Hoechlin could readily make you forget some of those who recently suited up: Henry Cavill, Brandon Routh…. Elizabeth Tulloch isn’t given enough to do in the opening chapter, all of which leaves her too earnest. Given her name is in the title let’s hope that balance shifts.

Nonetheless Superman & Lois makes for a broadly entertaining restart by Todd Helbing & Greg Berlanti (The Flash).

And yes there are villains and Krpytonite in store, but I’m not about to spoil the fun.

Superman & Lois airs 8:30pm Thursday on FOX8 and Binge.

  1. just watched the trailer & imho it looks awful. But i never liked ‘Lois & Clark’ either, which i guess in a way, this is an extension of the idea of the everyday life of Superman. I also disliked Smallville, but much of that was due to the poor quality acting & too much teen angst being part of the storyline.
    Anyway Chris Reeve will always be Superman to me & Margot Kidder always Lois, no one has come close to doing it as well as them & having the same on screen chemistry.

Todd Helbing and Greg Berlanti aren’t about to let their profitable DC franchise whither away, something had to replace Stephen Amell’s Arrow to provide the remaining Arrowverse characters with some future options in story crossovers if nothing else, now that we have Superman, Supergirl, Batgirl all we need is the Batman and maybe the Green Lantern to have a fully functioning DC comic book universe.
