2021: Women Behind TV

To mark International Women's Day here are the senior women working at Australian broadcasters.

In 2010, 2013 and 2016 TV Tonight filed on Women Behind TV.

Now on International Women’s Day is the fourth instalment noting key decision makers at Australian broadcasters.

Beverley McGarvey, Chief Content Officer & EVP, ViacomCBS Australia & New Zealand remembers joining 10 in 2006 from her role as  Director of Programming at TV3 NZ, where  the majority of programmers were women and one CEO was female.

“When I came here, it was often said to me, ‘It’s quite a male dominated industry.’ But I had never experienced that before because I’d worked in different markets. I do recall an instance where we had an LA screenings dinner and the programmers and the CEOs were all there. Everyone else at the table was male. That said, it was great dinner, and they were all very evolved, brilliant, guys. There was no problem with it, but it was just an observation in the gender mix.

“That’d probably be slightly different these days, and of course there’s people like Amanda Laing doing a phenomenal job at Foxtel. So there are definitely more women in senior role than there were then. I think probably we are not as advanced as some other markets. My boss is a woman. I work for Maria Kyriacou, who is the president of our cluster. The president of our streaming group, Kelly Day is also female. So there’s a lot of very senior, competent executive women at ViacomCBS.”

In 2021 diversity and inclusion extends to much more than gender parity.

“Obviously, representation on screen is one of the key pillars, because need to be able to see yourself on TV. Also, it is the right thing to do, not just for your audience, but commercially. Shows are better when you have a broader group of contestants. If everybody is the same, it’s boring. It is just better TV. When MasterChef & Amazing Race has a range of contestants, it is just more interesting,” she continues.

“There are certain shows that are harder to get the diversity you might like, because of the tone of the show. But we work hard, not just with our reality shows but in our dramas.”

As part of ViacomCBS global the Australian / NZ company also undertakes initiatives for staff including Champions of Change, Reconciliation Action Plan and more. There is also a ‘No Diversity / No Commission’ strategy which encompasses both on & off screen representation.

“Really what that’s about is making sure that your production partners understand what’s important. You don’t want to get pitched a management team for a show, that’s all one gender. We do so much work with production partners, and there are different types of people coming through their structures, so that you get diversity of thought and diversity of experience. It’s more about working with each production, to ensure that it matters to us. We’re the commissioners, so it has to matter to them.

“Most of the production companies here are actually very forthcoming in working with us on that. The big production companies all have global parent companies, instigating the same sorts of initiatives themselves.”

  1. This is a great list, certainly a lot more females in senior roles in media than I had previously thought. For some context, however, is it possible to know what would these numbers be in proportion to males in senior roles?
