SBS favourite Vikings screens its last ever episode tonight.
The Irish-Canadian period drama first debuted on SBS in 2013 with Aussie Travis Fimmel and Alyssa Sutherland plus Gabriel Byrne (someone still remembers missing a call for Travis Fimmel oops).
The Michael Hirst drama clocks up at 89 episodes,
Season Six B, Episode Ten: The Last Act
And so, we find ourselves at the end of our epic saga, an adventure which began a long time ago with the first Viking hero to emerge from the mists of myth and legend: Ragnar Lothbrok, a simple Norwegian farmer and a pagan. After Ragnar’s death, his famous sons took on his mantle and voyaged far and wide, from the steppes of Russia to the shores of the Mediterranean. And now, in a spectacular and shocking series finale, tragedy strikes, not only in the new land – but also in England.
9:30pm tonight on SBS.

Even though first intended as a 10 episode show I enjoyed the early seasons of Vikings as the mixture of drama and graphic violence was then still somewhat original in it’s concept, even if the history depicted was embellished for dramatic effect. Certainly the battle scene set pieces where expensive and well done but all good things will eventually come to an end and arguably I feel Vikings should have been concluded when Travis Fimmel left but the sons were intended to carry the story on.
A sequel of sorts is heading for Netflix written by the shows writer.
Have loved every episode of Vikings, thought they wrapped it up nicely but also left it open enough for a possible spin off.
Farewell indeed. What an epic ending. I am sad to see it end, but pleased they ended on their terms.
I’ve kept up with this series through out, the loss of favourite characters. I found it mostly mesmerising, although this final (half) season has been a struggle.
Has been very spotty these last couple of seasons-‘hang gliding’, amphibious assault craft and the loss of central and charismatic characters, as well as the attempts to redefine Ivar the Boneless as less than the psychotic mass murderer we know he is, There are attempts to run spinoff series about the Vinland/Greenland sagas.
