Golden Globes ratings slump

2021 ceremony is heading towards an all-time low in the USA.

It was a year when the world binged more than ever, but went to the cinema in desperately low numbers.

Yesterday’s Golden Globe Awards -which were a bit of a technical nightmare- are on track to be the awards show’s lowest-rated ceremony in the US ever.

NBC’s broadcast averaged just 5.42 million viewers and a 1.2 rating in the key ad demographic of adults 18-49. Both are down more than 60 percent from the preliminary figures from last year (14.76 million and 3.8).

The 2020 Golden Globes, which aired in early January and had an NFL playoff game as a lead-in, averaged 18.33 million viewers and a 4.7 in the 18-49 demographic in the finals.

Hollywood Reporter notes the last time the Golden Globes had anywhere near this small an audience was in 2008, when the writers strike forced the cancellation.

Final ratings will be updated tomorrow.

In Australia the Live broadcast drew 27,000 national viewers on FOX Arena, down on 59,000 last year.

  1. The audience is fragmented and everybody watches different shows for different reasons so why bother watching. Schitt Creek has a fanatical following but onlt 7.3 on Metacritc.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm has a 6.7 on the IMDB and 6.8 on Metacritic, but is the best comedy film according to Hollywood Gossip reporters, because of 1 scene that has nothing to do with comedy
I don’t subscribe to Netflix or Disney so haven’t seen The Manadlorian, Queens Gambit or The Crown. I would most likely like The Mandalorian (Space Western) and Queen’s Gambit (Chess allegory about Bobby Fischer) but I’m not foolish enough to bet against The Crown for the three major TV awards.
Of couse the most watched show in the US would be Emily In Paris, but that will never win a Hollywood Award.

  2. Not a fan nor defending the show but last year it aired in Australia on FOX8, the flagship channel on Foxtel.
And also the show was completely different due to Covid, less interest.!

  3. Ratings for award shows have been on the decline for the past few years; COVID has only accelerated the decline. Outside of the industry does anyone really care about the awards? Going by these numbers, answer is a hard no! The only people who care about them are people in the industry – just like every other award ceremony.
