Rhys Nicholson joins RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under

"I genuinely still can’t bloody believe it," says Aussie comedian, joining upcoming Stan series.

Comedian Rhys Nicholson has been named as the third judge on the RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under.

He joins RuPaul and Michelle Visage on the series which has recently been filming in New Zealand.

Premiering later this year on Stan, the 8-part series will see Australian & Nz drag queens compete to become the first ever Down Under Drag Race Superstar.

RuPaul, said: “Rhys Nicholson is the perfect addition to the Drag Race Down Under family. His quick wit, love of drag, and willingness to carry Michelle Visage’s heavy luggage have already made him indispensable. I know our audience is going to love him as much as we do.”

Rhys Nicholson, said: “I just can’t tell you how thrilled I am to have been invited into the illustrious house of Drag Race. I genuinely still can’t bloody believe it. The first words RuPaul ever said to me were ‘Welcome to the family’ and that’s exactly what it feels like. A family. Ru and Michelle are my new mummies. I hope the editors took out the bits where I’m just staring at them wide eyed trying to comprehend sitting next to them.

“Being able to be a part of the show and help expose the world to our distinctive and particularly magnificent style of Down Under drag will forever be a highlight of my life and an honour. I hope I didn’t F***. It. Up.”

The show’s competing queens will be revealed this Saturday at the 2021 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in a special parade float.

Stan Original Series RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under is a World of Wonder production in collaboration with Warner Bros. International Production New Zealand for Stan and TVNZ. Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey, Tom Campbell and RuPaul Charles serve as Executive Producers. Passion Distribution will distribute the series globally in line with Passion Distribution and WOW’s distribution strategy.

  1. So excited! He’s witty, he’s camp, he’s stylish and he has an international profile. I can see him having really good banter as well. 100 x better than bloody Ross Matthews. Great choice!

  2. Not a bad choice. Rhys is fashionable and will probably fit the panel well. I would’ve preferred Nath Valvo, though, who I personally find funnier. At least it’s not Joel Creasey.

    1. It also helps that Rhys has a recent Netflix special, giving him a more global profile. With Ru and Michelle involved, RPDR Down Under will definitely be seen beyond AU/NZ.
