German racing driver and former Top Gear presenter Sabine Schmitz has died.

German racing driver and former Top Gear presenter Sabine Schmitz has died, aged 51.

She revealed last year that she had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017.

She joined Top Gear in 2016 alongside Chris Evans & Matt le Blanc, following the exit of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. She first appeared on the show in 2004.

Schmitz was the only woman to win the German Nurburgring 24 Hours, a feat that earned her the title the “Queen of the Nurburgring.”

In a statement, Top Gear executive producer Clare Pizey described Schmitz as a “beloved member of the Top Gear family,” while tributes came in from other names on the show.

Jeremy Clarkson tweeted: “Terrible news about Sabine Schmitz. Such a sunny person and so full of beans.”

  1. I thought Sabine was fantastic and showed the 3 originals how to drive fast….and her bright personality and humour shone through, teasing Clarkson, scaring Hamster and appointed German of the year by May. Who will ever forget the Transit Van around the Nurburgring powering past Porsches and lambos driven by blokes. Legend RIP

PS I wish David had given this a little more prominence in News, rather than the Pay TV section. Too many women get overlooked too often. Not a criticism, just a wish
