Flintstones revived in Bedrock sequel

Fred is on the brink of retirement while Pebbles embarks on her own career, in animated sequel.

Flintstones, meet The Flintstones, they’re the modern Stone Age family in a brand new series, Bedrock.

An animated sequel has been greenlit by FOX in the US, to be set 20 years after the events of the original series, which ran from 1960 – 1966.

The new series will see Fred on the brink of retirement and 20-something Pebbles (Elizabeth Banks) embarking on her own career. As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club.

Lindsay Kerns (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, DC Super Hero Girls, Trolls: The Beat Goes On!) is writing the pilot script for the potential series.

“Long before The Simpsons and Springfield, the Griffins and Quahog or even when the Belchers started serving burgers on Ocean Avenue, there were The Flintstones and Bedrock,” Michael Thorn, president of entertainment for FOX Entertainment, said.

“Their imprint on the animation universe is undeniable and the idea of adapting it for today’s audience is a challenge we here at FOX are very much looking forward to taking on with Warner Bros., Elizabeth and Lindsay. No pressure whatsoever, really.”

The Flintstones are the first family of primetime animation,” Peter Girardi, executive vice president of alternative programming at Warner Bros. Animation, added. “Elizabeth and Lindsay have a brilliant take on these characters, and FOX and Brownstone are the perfect partners to bring them back to primetime. This is going to rock (sorry).”

The Flintstones has previously spawned a number of sequels, including The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, The Flintstone Comedy Hour, The New Fred and Barney Show, The Flintstone Kids, The Rubbles, as well as specials, telemovies, and two live action films.

  1. I take it this is going to be aimed at children… if not, it’s a big “screw you” by Fox to Seth MacFarlane, who tried to do a reboot of the Flintstones back in 2012/2013, but which ultimately was shelved by Fox as they didn’t think anyone would want to see a Flintstones aimed towards adult audiences.

  2. As a fan of the original (I’m currently watching the sixth season on dvd), this doesn’t sound as bad as some touted sequels over the years. I wonder if Pebbles and Bamm Bamm got together in this version as they did in some 90s animated movie specials. I do cringe every time I see that one of my favorites are being re-booted though with all the political requirements of new shows these days. And hey youngters if you haven’t seen the original, check them out, you won’t be dissapointed.

  3. If it can appeal to the younger generation as well, then reviving classic concepts can be a good way to bring families together to watch the shows. I saw The Flintstones Movie twice at the cinema in my youth as I liked it that much. I have also read about a few people in recent years saying that The Flintstones cartoons from the 60s or around that era had undertones of sexism that may not resonate with the modern era. I was probably too young to realise that years ago.

I think The Jetsons would be cool to reinvent for the modern era with new predictions of future technologies, evolutions or advancements.

    1. Definitely won’t include “we’ll have a gay old time” in the theme tune… 😀
I think from memory that was changed sometime in the 80s or 90s to “we’ll have a great old time”…

Also, I wonder if any of the Jetsons inventions or predictions have come true…

      1. Some of the predictions like video calls did come to fruition, but some of the other inventions like flying cars and robotic housekeepers are still in the infancy stages of development.
