No lift for MasterChef

Ratings: It should rightly have improved, but 10 reality show dipped. Fisk wraps strong for ABC.

10 might rightly have expected MasterChef Australia to lift in its numbers last night… the Top 24 were in the kitchen battling it out for the first time and Seven was offering little competition.

Instead the show dropped, again gazumped by Lego Masters on 766,000 -from the same production company Endemol Shine Australia.

Hard Quiz was next at 653,000 then MasterChef Australia (549,000), 7:30 (541,000) and Highway Patrol (378,000 / 361,000).

Later Fisk finished strong at 542,000 then The Weekly with Charlie Pickering (530,000), Amazing Grace (298,000), Bull (244,000 / 143,000).

Nine network won Wednesday with 29.0% then Seven 24.3%, 10 21.1%, ABC 18.5% and SBS 7.1%.

Nine News (921,000 / 909,000) was best for Nine. A Current Affair won at 701,000 with Hot Seat at 447,000 / 271,000. Footy Classified was 69,000 across the network.

Seven News was #1 at 947,000 / 933,000 for Seven. Home & Away pulled 573,000 then The Chase (480,000 / 317,000). A replay of movie: The Shawshank Redemption was 241,000.

The Project drew 436,000 / 287,000 for 10. 10 News First was 343,000 / 232,000.

ABC News was 640,000 for ABC.  QI (272,000), The Drum (170,000) followed.

On SBS it was Titanic: Dead Reckoning (194,000), SBS World News (177,000 / 135,000), History of Britain (166,000), Deadwater Fell (105,000) and Mastermind (82,000).

NCIS led multichannels at 179,000

  1. I record Masterchef and then fast forward all the filler bits…makes it much more tolerable and shorter…and last night that was very important as the very annoying and full of herself Emelia was on it. However I always thought it was mean’t to be home chefs getting experience and learning new things, these days it’s filled with people who cook things the rest of us would never cook at home and they have obviously already been in training for the show.

  2. I look forward to Ten “resting” the show and seeing an inferior but popular Masterchef reboot on Seven in a few years starring Sonia Kruger.

  3. I never watched Amazing Grace. Seemed like Love Child. Not a fan of Dramas about babies, but if that’s what it got for its final episode, it seems that Doctor Doctor might be in for a struggle too!

  4. Perhaps viewers are finally tiring of the over the top music ( it’s not Armageddon guys, its just a cooking show ) and the stretched out episodes ( though Shine would probably be charging by the minute so the longer the better for them ).
I also noticed Seven was running its late news updates out of Perth with Rick Arden presenting – perhaps they were stung missing the death of Andrew Peacock last week and have reverted to this instead of pre-recording the late news just after the 6 PM bulletin ?

  5. I think what is interesting and telling, even if a tiny snapshot, is that even readers’ comments here are being more negative towards this season of MasterChef (only a few episodes in), from running time to series run. Which would support the ratings decline, along with the other reasons which have been discussed in recent days as to last season. And as David noted in his article, probably more telling is it should’ve gone at least higher (if not a high), but actually continued to decline last night.

This not only gives Nine more space to continue to dominate, but really puts Seven back in the frame now, certainly from Anzac Day onwards with Big Brother, Farmer and AFL, as well as Q3 and Q4 anticipated (The Voice, etc).

I do feel for 10 and the show so far though, would’ve hoped surely for a minimum 600-700k!?

  6. I’ve found Fisk amusing but by no means essential viewing – and I’m a longtime Kitty fan. I’m expecting a renewal so I hope they sharpen things up and that it has a bit more purpose next time. It built on its lead-in audience just about every week, I think, which should be commended.

  7. Decent Titanic doco on SBS-deserved better numbers, but will be repeated many times no doubt-the movie footage they used was mostly from by far the best film of the event, ‘A Night To Remember’.

      1. People forget just how amazing, thrilling and action packed the second half of Cameron’s Titanic was. It sometimes gets overshadowed by the love story… but that film is one of the greats in my opinion.

        1. Not a patch on the British film-much left out so that you can’t fully understand what’s happening or why-big screen spectacle but almost all the cast are cardboard cut outs in comparison.

  8. I love Masterchef but 3 nights in a row of episodes approx 100 mins each in length is too much. Cut 20-30 mins off these episodes and the show would benefit greatly.

    1. Agree with that, an hour to an hour 15 each episode would be the sweet spot. I know it’s not a new thing this season, but watching them taste dishes for 45 minutes isn’t too thrilling!

      1. Big fan of the show but agree completely with Bruce and Cazz. I had to watch it after 10pm but fell asleep during the tastings and had to bail. Will have to make time to finish the episode later tonight instead.

    2. Imagine how much time they could save if they cut out all the contestants back stories. We don’t need all that information at this early stage.

    3. I see the same complaint over and over about shows like this. Networks pad out episodes far too long and are then surprised when viewers turn off. Why not make short, sharp 60 minute episodes?

  9. Not a good look for MC , from Sunday its Nigella week and 90 plus minutes then Mon-Thurs no more than 80 minutes an episode , whether this helps to lift ratings is another question.

  10. You can see what happens when programmers treat viewers with contempt 10 needs to keep the little viewers it has by giving a damn at what it shows at prime time. All it will be more of the usual low ratings for a quality show.

  11. Have so enjoyed Fisk. Love all the weird and wonderful characters but especially Julia Zemiro’s and Kitty’s.
    Really hope there’s another series.

        1. Imo the first two episodes were excellent and then it just has treaded water since. I mean it’s been enjoyable to watch, but nothing special.
Marty Sheargold said on his radio show yesterday morning that he hopes another season happens but then cryptically said “if that is in fact what Kitty wants to do”… it didn’t sound promising in context.

    1. I haven’t watched yet. I like to binge. However looking at its numbers in catchup and online, it’s huge, would give Bluey a run for its money 🙂

    2. Agree, it’s a refreshing show and a lot of laugh out loud moments in the 4 episodes I’ve watched so far. The scenes inbetween the credits at the end of episodes are great value too.
