SBS secures Giro d’Italia until 2025

Italian cycling race returns to SBS in May in a new deal for the home of cycling.

The Giro d’Italia will return to free-to-air television in May for the first time since 2016 as SBS secures  rights until 2025.

Under the new sublicence agreement with Discovery SBS has exclusive Australian free-to-air rights to deliver live, multi-platform coverage including television and digital.

Running from Saturday 8 May until Sunday 30 May, the 2021 Giro d’Italia starts in Turin and will see riders tackle 3479.9km of tough terrain before finishing in Milan. Known for its steep and difficult climbs, often through the Dolomites, the race is a tough three-week competition.

Former Giro winners Robbie McEwen and David McKenzie will join Matthew Keenan and Bridie O’Donnell hosting SBS coverage.

SBS Director of Sport Ken Shipp said: “Being able to bring the Giro d’Italia back to free-to-air television is great news both for SBS and our audience. We have been working hard to establish SBS as the home of cycling in Australia and this was the final piece in the puzzle. We will continue to make major cycling events available to all Australians and offer extensive, world-class coverage of these events.”

From 2021 to 2030, SBS will broadcast over 300 hours of cycling across the network each year. As well as the major Grand Tours,

SBS has a long history of broadcasting cycling, and currently has all three of cycling’s prestigious three-week-long Grand Tours; the Tour de France, Vuelta a España and the Giro d’Italia. SBS also has the exclusive Australian rights to the Paris Roubaix, Fleche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

The 2021 Giro d’Italia will be broadcast live on SBS VICELAND and live streamed on SBS On Demand from Saturday 8 May.

  1. I too do miss the Soccer on SBS. But have been enjoying the cycling more on SBS of late, and not just the famous Tour de France. The scenic shots are nice too. Lol.

Michael Tomalaris has been covering the cycling for such a while now. And has a gentle approach to it too. So underrated.

  2. As long time soccer fan, I must admit that I rarely watch any televised soccer anymore but much prefer the cycling. Those guys are so tough, crashing at 50kmh then getting back on the bike and finishing a 150km race while footballers are rendered unconscious by a strong breeze.

  3. So much for RCS’s obsession with only giving rights to pay TV broadcasters. The only one in Australia that wanted to show their races shut down through lack of audience. Great to have the Giro back on free to air.
