ABC: We’re not expecting any surprises in the budget

ABC Chair Ita Buttrose almost rules out unexpected cuts in next week's Federal Budget. Almost.

When the Federal Budget is handed down next Tuesday ABC is not expecting any surprises, according to Chair Ita Buttrose.

But never say never….

“The ABC has been assured that our funding is guaranteed under the current triennium. We’re not expecting any surprises in the budget. But one can often be surprised. I take that as read,” she said yesterday at the National Press Club.

“We would hope that we would see some approval given to the continuation of the Enhanced Newsgathering Fund, which has another year to run and which has allowed us to do a lot more work in regional Australia.

“We have to wait and see what the Treasurer has in store for us with the Budget. But we are not expecting any particular cuts. It may be different next year, when we go to the polls.”

  1. It would be great If ABC could provide local television news services In areas such as Mildura where local TV news no longer exists old television studios could be used to produce such services.

  2. Ita says “It may be different next year, when we go to the polls” … is she suggesting that the ABC’s taxpayer-funded budget allocation could be affected by political motives? … who’d ‘ve thunk it?!?!
