Rebooted action series Kung Fu, now with a female lead character, will premiere in early June on Binge.

Produced by Greg Berlanti, the 13 episode series stars Olivia Liang (Legacies, Into The Dark), plus Tzi Ma (Mulan, The Farewell), Kheng Hua Tan (Crazy Rich Asians), Eddie Liu (Silicon Valley, Broad City, Never Have I Ever), Shannon Dang (The L Word: Generation Q), Gavin Stenhouse (Black Mirror, Allegiance) Vanessa Kai (New Amsterdam), Tony Chung and Aussie Jon Prasida (Tomorrow, When the War Began).

The original series with David Carradine screened for 3 seasons from 1972.

The new series premiered in the US in early April and has been renewed for a second season.

Recently renewed for a second season, the series follows Chinese-American woman Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang) whose quarter-life crisis causes her to drop out of college and journey to an isolated monastery in China. But when she returns to San Francisco, she finds her hometown is overrun with crime and corruption and her parents are at the mercy of a powerful Triad.

Nicky must rely on her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community and bring criminals to justice… all while searching for the ruthless assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor Pei-Ling and is now targeting her.

Christina M. Kim wrote the pilot episode and serves as executive producer/co-showrunner of the series with Robert Berens. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Martin Gero and David Madden also serve as executive producers. Kung Fu is produced by Berlanti Productions and Quinn’s House in association with Warner Bros. Television and is inspired by the original series created by Ed Spielman.

June 3 on Binge (Foxtel is yet to confirm Airdate).

  1. Ah!, Greg Berlanti he has to be the most prolific US TV show producer this decade, and now he has Kung Fu which used to be owned by Warner Bros like many of Berlanti’s other franchises.
I note that this new series will have 6 episodes, if it proves popular I’m sure there will be a few more, though dare I say having a female lead character in this traditional male martial arts genre does look a bit commercially risky, we shall have to wait and see.

      1. Yes, sorry, I was checking on Greg Berlanti’s involvement and noted some wrong information as these are the episodes released, not the whole series.
