Call for Entries: SBS Emerging Writers’ Incubator (SA)

A 12-month paid placement is on offer for a South Australian writer.

Entries have opened for diverse South Australian writers to gain hands-on experience with paid work in a leading Australian production company.

The SBS Emerging Writers’ Incubator is an initiative by SBS, Screen Australia and state funding bodies.

The South Australian Film Corporation will place one SA writer in a leading Australian production company for a 12-month paid placement. They will develop ideas into treatments, work across the company’s fiction slate of programming, participate in writers’ rooms, and work closely with development producers and others to increase their knowledge and further develop their skills.

SAFC CEO Kate Croser said: “This is a golden opportunity for any writer, but particularly for someone looking to build their credits in television and form relationships with renowned producers. We are thrilled to be able to partner with SBS and Screen Australia on this exciting initiative which aligns with the SAFC’s strategic aim of increasing diversity in the South Australian screen sector, and growing and diversifying the state’s pool of credited key creatives.”

Other states will call for applicants in the same scheme later.

This innovative initiative supports the SAFC’s strategic aim to grow and diversify the pool of credited key creatives and will foster greater diversity in the South Australian screen sector by providing significant work experience in drama production for emerging writers from backgrounds and with lived experiences currently underrepresented in the sector.

Applicants must be from underrepresented groups including First Nations practitioners, practitioners from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Deaf and disabled practitioners, women and female-identifying practitioners, those from the LGBTQIA+ community, and practitioners located in regional and remote areas.

The national initiative has three rounds over three years, with one placement opportunity each year for a South Australian writer.

The SBS Emerging Writers’ Incubator is a national initiative co-funded by SBS, Screen Australia with participating state and territory agencies including the South Australian Film Corporation, and with the assistance of the Australian Writers’ Guild.
