Renewed: Sanditon gets a lifeline after axing

Axed after a single season, period drama is uncancelled with not one, but two more seasons ordered.

UK period drama Sanditon has been thrown a lifeline renewed for not one, but two new seasons -despite being axed in 2019.

The commission comes from PBS’ Masterpiece and BritBox UK despite ITV cancelling it for low numbers.

An ITV spokesperson previously said, “We loved Sanditon and we were very proud to have it on ITV.

“We would have loved it to return, but unfortunately we just didn’t get the audience that would make that possible for us, which is heartbreaking for everybody involved in this wonderful adaptation.

Sanditon is yet to air in the US and we hope they may find a way of continuing with this series.”

I guess the USA did just that. Buoyed by interest in Bridgerton, perhaps?

The adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished last novel by writer Andrew Davies stars Rose Williams, Kris Marshall, Anne Reid & Theo James and screened in Australia on BBC First and ABC.

  1. Main hunk star Theo James wont be returning though, he said; ‘Although I relished playing Sidney, for me I have always maintained that his journey concluded as I wanted it to’, he wished the cast and crew of Sanditon every success for the future.
The parallel with Bridgerton with both male stars leaving is an interesting issue for the producers of both shows.

  2. ITV has struggled with dramas that aren’t crime procedurals since Downton Abbey finished. ITV owns half of Britbox and has a close working relations ship with PBS who co-produce alot of their dramas for the US rights. These days sequals, prequels, remakes, reboots . rip-offs and cancelled shows have a much high chance of sucess than an original idea because they some recognistion. Though Sanditon was based on a novel and had an ending or sorts that wrapped everyting up and probably wasn’t likely to continue on ITV anyway.
