Whatever happened to It’s a Date?

After it won an international format award, Sarah Jessica Parker wanted Peter Helliar's first scripted comedy.

Before he penned How to Stay Married, Peter Helliar created anthology comedy series, It’s a Date, in which he was first paired with Lisa McCune.

The series with guest stars on romantic dates each episode screened for 2 seasons on ABC and, remarkably, won a format award at the International Format Awards at MIPCOM 2013 in Cannes.

But the Princess Pictures series is yet to be realised in another territory.

Language

Helliar tells TV Tonight, “It was actually with Sarah Jessica Parker’s Pretty Matches for a few years. There was a script written for HBO but it kind of got caught between some changes at HBO. We survived the first round of culls but as you know, when somebody new takes over, they kind of like to make room for their own projects.

“At the time they had VEEP, Vice Principals, Silicon Valley, Curb (Your Enthusiasm) and they said ‘We don’t know when we can get to this.’ It was disappointing. Then it was with (Schitt’s Creek broadcaster) POP for a little while. But we still hope it can get done because there’s actually been a few shows that, to be honest, have taken the format and put their own spin on it.”

Never say never. It’s a simple and engaging premise which hardly -pardon the pun- dates.

“It’s gone into development in Germany just a couple weeks ago,” Helliar adds.

“There’s still hope. It’s such a universal idea.”

How to Stay Married airs 8:40pm Tuesday on 10.

  1. The episode where comedian Ross Noble and Ian Smith (Harold from Neighbours) meet on a date and accuse each other of having misleading dating app profile pics was gold.
