New lease for Sydney film hub

10 yr lease for Canal Road Film Centre ends uncertainty for industry tenants.

NSW government’s arts agency, Create NSW will take over management of Leichardt film and theatre production hub Canal Road Film Centre ending uncertainty for industry tenants.

Create NSW will take over the lease from Property NSW in a 10-year deal, with the option for a further 10, according to The Age.

The 1300 square metres site houses some 85 separate businesses including costumiers, gaffers, model makers, special effects teams and lighting and set designers.

Productions to benefit from Canal Road businesses include musicals Hamilton and Moulin Rouge, films Star Wars, Mad Max, Penguin Bloom, The Water Diviner and TV productions including Wolf Like Me, Packed to the Rafters, Hardball, Mr. Inbetween.

“For Create NSW to take over is a really great thing for us,” said Leonie Grace, owner of Sydney Costume Workshop. “They say they are offering permanent tenancies; it’s just a matter of how that happens and what does the future looks like, who is representing us at the table when negotiating the new terms and conditions of the leases.”
