Travel Guides: June 2

Nine guides discover the historical wonders of Mexico City and the southern region of Oaxaca.

Travel Guides this week discover the historical wonders of Mexico City and the southern region of Oaxaca.

Arriving in huge and chaotic Mexico City, our travellers attempt to escape the traffic with an e-bike tour. Some of our Guides struggle to ride a bike at the best of times. Once they figure it out, rich Aztec and Spanish historical sites and cultural re-enactments await, including the death-defying Dance of the Flyers.

Swapping their peddles for paddles, our Guides discover the canal crossed landscape of Southern Mexico City. Joining the locals, our travellers order drinks, takeaway quesadillas and dancing Mariachi bands for a floating fiesta.

Mexico City is the best place in the world to try tacos … but are our Guides ready for the unfamiliar ingredients? With tummies full of offal, our Travel Guides don masks and step into the ring to learn Mexico’s most popular sport, Lucha Libre, known to gringos as Mexican wrestling.

Heading six hours south to the traditional region of Oaxaca, our Guides make their base in Oaxaca city, staying in family-run guesthouses. Unfortunately, sharing with others is not for all of our intrepid Travellers.

The Oaxaca region is known for pottery, so our Guides join in a pottery workshop before visiting the famous food markets. Trying Mexican style barbecued meat with enough guacamole for a house deposit has our Guides in love with the local culture.

7:30pm tonight on Nine.
