Crowd exceptions for some Olympic events… maybe

Four prefectures outside Tokyo's State of Emergency may still be able to have limited crowds.

There may yet be some Olympic events that can find a way for limited crowds.

While Japan declared a State of Emergency for Tokyo and three neighbouring prefectures -Chiba, Saitama and Kanagawa- there are four other prefectures which are outside the rule: Miyagi, Fukushima, Shizuoka and Ibaraki.

NHK reports a limited number of fans will be allowed at events in those prefectures. In Fukushima, baseball and softball games will be held with fans.

As for the northern prefecture of Hokkaido, organisers had said up to 10,000 people would be allowed to watch soccer games at the Sapporo Dome stadium. The figure is within 50 percent of the venue’s capacity.

But while Hokkaido officials have asked the organising committee to ban spectators, a final decision is yet to be made.

Yesterday a member of the Israeli delegation tested positive for the coronavirus at the airport.

This marks the fourth case to be confirmed among foreign teams. In recent weeks, two members of the Ugandan team and an athlete from Serbia were found to be infected.

An Olympic staff member also tested positive upon arrival in Japan on Thursday.
