  1. Regardless if you factor in live streaming and regional viewers not being included, i still believe the interest in the Olympics has waned. Politics and woke ideologies are turning potential viewers off. Considering many states are in lockdown and time zone advantage numbers should have been much higher. If we were not in lockdown the numbers would have been lower.

  2. It’s interesting when you compare the opening ceremony numbers to population In 2004 the Australian population was 20 million with a rating of 3.03 million for the opening ceremony in Athens

In 2008 at Beijing the population of Australia was 21 million with the ratings at 3.3 million

Today Australia’s population is 25.7 million with ratings of 2.2 million

London and Rio were terrible… but its obvious the interest in the Olympic games is not what it once was

      1. How do streaming numbers work in this case?

Given that there are over 2 dozen Olympic channels on 7plus would these be added to the Channel 7 overall total, or do only the streaming numbers of the main broadcast station (ie:7, 7two, 7mate and 7flix) count?

    1. 7Plus streams have been very good as they appear to have given it a bit of Love before the Olympics with the the cycling stream basically at 5Mbps using 720p60 (The direct/single sport feeds appear to be encoded at 60 fps, the live channels are 720p50, make sure your device is set accordingly) . If your watching it Via DVB streaming your doing it wrong IMO as you have way less adds and 720p60 looks better than the 1080i50 that is available to myself.

Then the question is are the IP streamers caught in these stats? I don’t recon they are.

    2. I think the London Games may have to do with many events being placed on a paywall. Back in Oct 2007, Nine/Fox secured the rights to 2010 and 2012 Games.
When i watched the rio games, the games were being placed in an extensive timezone and I didn’t think it’s friendly. As well, people have to pay to watch all other events on the 7Olympics App.

    1. Thanks for these numbers for the previous Opening Ceremony. Always good to see and compare.

For last night – Surely Seven would be over the moon for the shares and ratings for the Ceremony.

      1. Perhaps the strong result would have been half expected given:
        * aligned timezone with Tokyo and our primetime viewing; Friday night, stay up late
        * lockdowns in three AUS states – not much else to do
