NRL, AFL games in SE QLD impacted in snap lockdown.

Updated: NRL makes agreement with Qld govt for R20 to be completed on Sunday, Monday. AFL shifts to Melb.

Earlier:

AFL, NRL and Super Netball matches to be held in SE Queensland are out this weekend as a snap lockdown takes effect from 4pm today.

Queensland health chief Dr Jeanette Young said no games will proceed.

“No, there will be no football matches,” she said.

“So, no community sport, no professional sport, nothing for the next three days. Starting as of 4:00pm today.”

The list of cancelled NRL games include the Newcastle Knights v Canberra Raiders, Melbourne Storm v Penrith Panthers, Canterbrury Bulldogs v Gold Coast Titans and the Cronulla Sharks v Manly Sea Eagles.

AFL games include: Gold Coast Suns v Melbourne Demons, Essendon vs Sydney Swans and GWS Giants v Port Adelaide.

Update: The NRL has placed all 16 clubs on Level 4 biosecurity protocols in the wake of the Queensland government announcing a snap three-day lockdown on Saturday morning.

All clubs have been advised to inform their players to return to the team hotels and remain at the team hotels until further notice.

Thirteen interstate clubs were recently relocated to southeast Queensland due to restrictions in Sydney and Melbourne.

The NRL is working with the Queensland Government, clubs and broadcast partners to determine the best course of action for Saturday’s matches.

Update 2:

The NRL will introduce new Level 4+ protocols as part of an agreement with the Queensland Government for round 20 of the Telstra Premiership to be completed on Sunday and Monday.

The three originally scheduled Saturday games will now be played on Sunday at Suncorp Stadium, headlined by a 4.05pm Storm v Panthers blockbuster. Sunday’s fixtures have been switched to Monday to ensure the entire round is completed ahead of round 21.

Three AFL matches originally scheduled in Queensland this weekend have been relocated to Melbourne to form a mega Sunday comprising of five matches. Essendon, Gold Coast SUNS, GWS GIANTS and the Sydney Swans departed Queensland yesterday afternoon and travelled to Victoria via charter flights.

  1. I said this in Danny’s tweet; but the NRL must take some responsibility here. After several of their players broke the bubble and QLD frequently warning them that they will be booted, they really shouldn’t cry victim here. How much rope before they hang themselves? The NRL doesn’t deserve to “work with the QLD government” on this.
