UK production begins on Sanditon S2

Cast and crew have now gathered for the first read-through in London.

After being axed then revived, and enduring a pandemic, British period drama Sanditon is back in production.

ITV had originally canned the idea of a second season but the period drama’s fanbase campaigned to save the show and it was brought back by BritBox and its American broadcaster, PBS Masterpiece for not one but two more seasons.

Cast and crew have now gathered for the first read-through in London.

Rose Williams, who plays young heroine, Charlotte Heywood, will return in the lead, but Theo James will not be returning as her love interest.

Writer Justin Young has also taken over from Andrew Davies -but he returns as executive producer and has written several episodes.

The official synopsis confirms: “The drama will continue to follow the high-spirited and independent heroine, Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams, Curfew) as she returns to the picturesque coastal resort of Sanditon.

“Charlotte’s journey is one thread of an intricate tapestry of compelling stories full of intrigue, excitement, and romance. Against the backdrop of beautiful vistas, familiar faces return and new inhabitants are introduced – all of whom will be having adventures as joyous and surprising as the seaside town itself.”

Sanditon airs in Australia on BBC First and ABC.

  1. I just finished watching this on abc and am happy to know there will be furthers seasons. At the same time disappointed to know Theo James won’t be returning. Will he be re-cast or just away from Sanditon to return for the third season?

    1. The short answer is no, the Sanditon producers did intend to continue the romance between Mr. Parker and Miss Heywood, that was if season 2 was announced, but after the cancellation Theo James took the opportunity to quickly leave the show never to return.
A new romance will be featured in Sanditon’s revival, though I think Miss Heywood will be a bit teary for a while like a number of other Theo James fans I suspect.
