Wimbledon: Ash Barty v Ajla Tomljanović

It's an all-Aussie battle and one very late start time for true tennis fans.

Two Aussies Ash Barty and Ajla Tomljanović will go head to head at Wimbledon tonight at the very late start of 1.30am AEST.

The last time 2 Aussie women met head-to-head in the quarterfinals at any Slam was in 1980 Wimbledon when Evonne Goolagong Cawley defeated Wendy Turnbull.

The winner will advance to the semi-finals, keeping her Wimbledon hopes alive. It will also mark the first appearance by an Australian woman at a Wimbledon semi-final since Jelena Dokic in 2000.

Barty is coming off a straight-sets win against the Czech Barbora Krejčíková while Tomljanović’s last opponent retired in the second set.

This will be the first time Tomljanović has reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and her first quarter-final appearance at a Grand Slam tournament.

Barty will also be playing in her first quarter-final on the grass courts of Wimbledon as she fights for her second Grand Slam title.

In the first quarter-final from 10.00pm tonight on 9Gem Karolína Plíšková plays Viktorija Golubic on Court 1, with Karolína Muchová and Angelique Kerber to follow. Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka then meet at 11.30pm on Centre Court before the Barty-Tomljanović match.

Wimbledon coverage is on Nine, 9GEM and Stan Sport.

  1. The match should just win the “middle of the night ratings”. Tough competition against the Home Shopping shows. lol.

Jokes aside. I like these two players. Happy the made the quarters. A shame its against each other. And i think Nine/ 9Gem have done a good job covering the tournament so far too.

  2. Its so great to see both of them doing so well. It just sucks that they have to face each other in the quarters rather than a final lol. Guess it’ll be a late one tonight.
