10 signs 3 year deal with NBL

2 games Live on 10 Peach and streamed live on 10 Play under new NBL deal.

NBL will return to Network 10 for the first time since the 2014 / 2015 season following a three-year partnership with the National Basketball League.

The deal will see two games broadcast live each Sunday afternoon in a marquee timeslot during the NBL season, showcasing four hours of basketball action on 10 Peach and streamed live in HD on 10 Play, from 1pm.

Adam Cush, Director of Sport Production, Network 10, said: “We are thrilled to welcome back the NBL to Network 10.

“We are looking forward to working closely with the NBL to take the sport to all Australians and broadcasting a fantastic season of the league, which also boasts several of the Australian Boomers Olympic bronze medallists.”

NBL Owner and Executive Chairman Larry Kestelman said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Network 10 back into the NBL family.

“Network 10 played a major role in the NBL’s booming popularity in the 1990s and we are thrilled to have them back on board to help take our league to the next level.

“This season is shaping up as one of the best yet notwithstanding the challenges ahead, it will be great to welcome back the numerous Australian Boomers Olympic bronze medallists returning to the NBL, marquee signings and the inclusion of the Tasmania JackJumpers,” Kestelman said.

“We are excited to have Network 10 as part of the NBL family for the next three seasons which gives our fans a consistent free-to-air home of the NBL.”

In July, Foxtel also announced a new 3 year agreement with the National Basketball League and ESPN.

  1. interesting to see this deal come about. would have thought SBS would have been a better fit. This will be the 3rd time Network Ten broadcasts the NBL. 1st was from 1993 to 1998, then from 2009/10 to 2014/15. What started promising with live primetime games on ONE hd was reduced to only Sunday games live and only on east coast. The Friday night games were Live only on east coast 9.30 pm on One hd when those games were in Perth 7.30pm. This was because there strategy & ownership changed. I am not sure how serious 10 was about picking up exclusive rights to NBL for Paramount+ & 10, similar to the APL and FA deal recently. I agree with others that games on a Sunday afternoon should be on 10 not a multichannel. 10 don’t have anything to drive audiences to their news broadcast at 5. NBL is better what they have atm. At least we are starting to see what there schedule will look like in summer. A League in primetime and W League daytime Saturday on 10 and NBL on Sundays. Still no primetime!

    1. Agree with you. 10Bold would be a better fit. they have shown sport on 10bold in recent years. still for the timeslot they have chosen 10/10hd is still a better and more suitable. 10 peach not because of the demo. if they wanted kids to watch then put it on 10Shake. Still 10/10hd is where it should be.

  2. Is this gonna be the first thing 10Play has ever done in HD? Hopefully that means new life is being given to that service because it is terrible compared to the others.
Surely they can at least manage to breakaway 10HD from the main channel to show NBL in HD on FTA? If they really don’t want to play it on the main channel, surely doing breakaway on 10HD would work?

    1. HD on the FTA streaming services generally means low bitrate 720p at 25fps. Seven+ at least streams 7 and 7mate (and 7’s Olympics coverage) at 50fps which is the minimum for a decent sports broadcast. Nine Now’s tennis coverage was basically unwatchable because of the low frame rate. 25fps may be standard for drama content, but it certainly doesn’t look good with sport coverage.

      1. 25fps was chosen because clock rate was easily divisible by the 220v/240v/ 50Hz power grid used by European Countries back in 1962.
its wasn’t a “magical” standard for drama content.

  3. The Australian Basketball (NBL) should be on 10’s primary channel in Full HD and Live as a lead in to the 5PM news on Sunday.
Especially if it starts at 1pm and is a 4-hour broadcast it’s a perfect lead in programming for the east coast’s 5pm 10 News First ( in NSW/VIC/TAS/ACT).
In QLD/SA/NT/WA when daylight savings don’t align with the news at 5pm (local time) put a 30 min (SA) or 1 hour (QLD) etc magazine show (a la NBL this week or Sports tonight or another encore show) on between the NBL and 5pm news when it finishes on time.
If it overrun then yes only then swap to 10Peach but only when the 5pm bulletin starts locally on the east coast.
Come on NBL, 10, ViacomCBS put Live Australian Sport on the primary channel.

    1. This, i have to agree with. seems to be a good strategy which leads into news. although the separation when day light savings kicks in would be a problem as their is continuity between sport and news. I like your idea of slotting a revamped ‘Spots Tonight’ for states that don’t fall into line with AESDT.
      good thinking goaustv

    2. Agree. maybe they will change. I think a highlights/analysis show something like Sunday Basketball which aired on both 10 and ABC, should air when the daylight savings kick in. As for Sports Tonight bringing that back as a wrap up an talk show similar to Offsiders or Sports Sunday but in Primetime would be best on 10 Bold or on 10play on Sunday Nights once a week, (IMO the old format is probably redundant because of the internet/YouTube/social media) maybe even on Paramount+ to ad more value and enticement to sign up. Shame to such a a great brand wasted or not being used.

  4. What is soo important that’s airing on 10HD on a Sunday afternoon that they cannot have the NBL?

In my opinion the previous deal with SBS was better because it was in HD.

  5. I wonder what important re-runs (sorry, “encore presentations”) 10 will be airing on 10HD on a Sunday afternoon that can’t make way for live sport

  6. Well this is an absolute waste of money and I’d like to know what they spent.
So no use of the primary channel on TEN HD and low bit rate blurry viewing on Peach with that annoying crap logo ,sorry i won’t waste my time with this.

    1. Is there really a thing called primary channel. These days most stations are on a even footing. Their only differences are programs aired on them. Ten did a good job with Basketball and i expect they will lift the profile of the sport.

      1. Well let’s see how it pans out ,as I said and others mention what is so important that this can’t be shown in HD ,if all channels were HD this wouldn’t be an issue.

          1. True. Other than SBS Viceland and SBS WM, all HD channels are also broadcast in SD for TVs/STBs that cannot receive HD. Ten is the only commercial network that only has one HD channel in 5 city metro markets.

          2. How many TVs are in the market that dont have HD?? I suggest you will find 99% of the population have a HD tv’s now. TVs are so cheap now and even pensioners have upgraded.
