Australia's longest running TV show began with a staff of just 6 and a weekly budget of £480.

Four Corners turns 60 next week, the longest running program on Australian television.

It began on 19th August 1961 with a staff of just six and a weekly budget of £480. Originally a ‘magazine’ style show made up of several stories, copies of the program were flown around the country for broadcast.

The show has gone on to win 62 Walkley Awards, seven of them Gold Walkleys, as well as 23 Logie Awards. It is one of just 5 shows inducted into the Hall of Fame.

  1. Great pictorial tribute David. 4 Cnrs was what made the ABC great in the first few decades. Groundbreaking shows like this and Play School and Countdown among so many others.

  2. I thought the best opening theme for 4 Corners was the Theme from Lost Patrol. I note that by 1979 they were running it through an enhancer to try and make it sound more modern. The theme music they switched to was nowhere near as good, and I note in the 1980s they started using that infamous paintbox that they were using in The National and Summer National in 1985 and early 1986.

  3. “1961 … a weekly budget of £480” ($960) … so taking inflation into account (Source: RBA) the weekly budget should now stand at about $16,000 … does that sound about right?
