Hey Hey calls for 50th anniversary ideas

Daryl Somers turns to the fans ahead of 50th celebrations in October.

Daryl Somers is planning celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of Hey Hey it’s Saturday, due in early October.

Somers took to the loyal HHIS Facebook fans to ask for ideas for old and new segment ideas.

“As we approach the 50th anniversary of Hey Hey It’s Saturday we will be letting you know our plans to celebrate the event.

“One thing I realise is that pretty much from day one, a significant portion of our show was generated by you, our loyal audience. Whether through ‘What Cheeses Me Orff’, ‘Phunny Fotos’, ‘Media Watch Press’ etc, you provided us with fodder for fun.

“It’s only appropriate to keep that going for our 50th, so time to mine your memories and get your creative juices flowing.

“Tell us what you would like to see again from Hey Hey episodes from yesteryear or maybe you could suggest an idea for a segment in a celebratory show.

“Even better, if you have a funny or strange story about your life or a friend’s that somehow involves Hey Hey, video it and send it to [email protected]

“We’d love to hear from you.

“Meanwhile, stay safe and be happy in this weird wide world in which we live. Daryl.”

Presumably a celebratory show refers to a TV special rather than a stage event which would be difficult in the current climate. But it could also be a one-off subscription event similar to what Young Talent Time held for its 50th.

The Herald Sun speculates that Seven could be a contender, given Daz is linked to Dancing with the Stars after claiming Nine is not involved.

Seven declined to comment.

  1. A compilation of the best bits from HHIS over the years and a voice over. Please don’t try to recreate because it cant be done without being cringeworthy and sad.

    1. Totally agree! People have a choice to simply not watch at the end of the day, like any other show they don’t like. I sure know I’ll be tuning in though! 😁

  2. For a show that ran for decades on a particular network, to run an anniversary show on another network makes no sense to me. I would watch a reunion show or a special – nostalgia is not the worst thing to be embracing right now. But that’s just me. I get that some people it seems aren’t keen.

  3. People need to lighten up, really. The show was fun and light entertainment, it was a good laugh on a Saturday night.

People saying that the show is sexist etc. What about about other shows on TV that perv on the male body and the women can’t handle themselves, such as The Batchelor for example. It’s alright for women to do that to guys and no-one says anything, but when a guy does it, the whole world crashes down.

  4. I was a fan of HHIS back in the 80’s and 90’s but to even do another one off anniversary show is like flogging a dead horse. Please leave this in the past.

    1. Do a one off compilation special of best bits, and perhaps a round table reunion style interview only.

Don’t wheel out everyone trying to recreate the past. It won’t be good, if the revival shows from a few years ago are anything to go by.

  5. From what I’ve read Daryl still has the Hey Hey set. Would be a pity to see the anniversary float by without it being on TV. C’mon channel 9 make it happen

  6. Do a Facebook Live show. That’s where all the boomers are. It’d draw a pretty big audience if it was promoted. Also more freedom to do comedy that might not fly elsewhere.

  7. It’s hard to believe that this show started about a week the day Walt Disney World opened ,1st October 1971 ,HHIS 9/10.
My question is who owns all the Copyright material related to HHIS ,is it both 9 and Daryl or separate.

  8. Does this mean Darryl’s hosting the next round of Dancing?
I thought after his less-than-stellar performance earlier this year 7 would be looking elsewhere…

  9. If the special does air on 7, then I guess it would be without Lavina Nixon, who is contracted to nine, no chance they would allow her to appear on a different network.
