Record audience for Paralympics Opening Ceremony

Paralympics surpass previous events giving Seven a winning night. ABC viewing dropped.

Seven drew a bumper share of 37.6% last night winning ever slot except at 7pm while ABC was hard hit from as early as 7:30pm.

Given primetime main channel coverage, Tokyo’s Paralympics Opening Ceremony drew 643,000 / 315,000 metro viewers.

Even though that was split into two portions it surpasses previous events:

Athens 2004: 25,000
Beijing 2008: 465,000
London 2012: 155,000
Rio 2016: 47,000

The Voice again topped entertainment at 1.11m metro viewers as coach teams were brutally trimmed to just 5 acts each.

That was again well in front of Australian Survivor 689,000, The Block (609,000), 7:30 (495,000) and Back to Nature at just 253,000.

Behind the Paralympics were The Hundred with Andy Lee (390,000) and The Cheap Seats (321,000).

Seven network easily won the night at 37.6% then Nine 24.4%, 10 19.2%, ABC 12.1% and SBS 6.8%.

Seven News was #1 at 1.2m / 1.13m for Seven. Home & Away was 686,000 then The Chase (624,000 / 393,000).

  1. I streamed the OC of the Paralympics Live on 7+. However, during the parade of nations, they cut off to ad break and i didnt know which countries are marching in order. I looked on YouTube and noticed that they were able to see the coverage in full.

  2. Seven picking up The Voice could single-handedly send Nine into second place this year I feel…it was no launchpad for The Block either as it usually is. Why the hell would Nine launch The Block straight off the back of the Olympics also, ridiculous and a bit arrogant. The show is also boring this year, maybe they should move it around Australia a bit – different cities could make it more interesting.

  3. To my mind, The Block producers/channel 9 seem to love Ronnie and Georgia but an awful lot of people don’t like them. I find her extremely annoying so can’t watch this season except for a bit of a look while Survivor has commercials on.

    1. This is the problem with so much reality TV now. Producers pick a contestant and build the whole show around them, like we had Big Brother through the eyes of Danny and Survivor has all been through the eyes of George.

Fans tend to hate this – they want to watch the show through their own eyes and make their own judgements rather than see producers treat individual contestants as bigger than the format itself.

  4. The Paralympics Opening Ceremony was much better than the Olympic Opening Ceremony. Maybe they listened and changed it as it was waaay colourful, had a ‘wow’ factor and was more entertaining.

  5. This season of The Block has turned into a disaster for Channel 9. They have no option but to persist and hope it stages a bit of a recovery after The Voice finishes. Hopefully, they learn the lesson that it supposed to be a renovation show. If they want it to be a show of manufactured petty conflicts, maybe it should move to Gem and be screened after Below the Decks.

Casting is also a major problem; bringing back annoying characters from previous series is not a recipe for success. If Fans and Faves is actually going to happen, you need to bring back loved characters not annoying and you probably need to handicap the Faves a bit through budget or similar.

I used to enjoy The Block but I’m not bothering at all with it this year.

    1. The fact they invited back the 2 most antagonistic couples across the last few series tells you everything you need to know about what type of show they were trying to make. Renovation was always going to take a backseat to bitching, which is frustrating, because they are wasting a great location on these annoying characters!
