Report: Seven in the chase for NRL rights

Seven keen to nab three State of Origin matches, and one NRL game per round.

Media articles today suggest again that Seven network is keen to wrestle the NRL broadcasting rights from Nine.

The Australian reports Seven has expressed interest in bidding for the three State of Origin matches, and one NRL game per round.

Network 10 is also understood to have indicated it is considering a bid for NRL free-to-air rights, currently held by Nine through to the end of the 2022.

NRL would be looking at a deal worth at least a combined $600m through to 2027, the same year Foxtel’s pay-television rights deal was extended to last year.

Rugby league administrators have met with new Nine CEO Mike Sneesby, who announces Nine financial results this morning, and held a series of preliminary meetings with Seven and 10.

  1. Next year will decides who gets the NRL. 7 has extended its AFL through to end of 2024 Season. 7 will have to pay a lot of money to screen NRL (including the Origin, International Tests).
Should this happen: I dare say NRL will have to be shown on 7mate in southern states while rest will be on 7 in northern states.

  2. If Seven get NRL and Nine then get AFL, that will almost complete the “everything that was on Seven is now on Nine and everything that was on Nine is now on Seven” thing that is going on now. The Voice, Beauty and the Geek, Farmer Wants a Wife, etc…

  3. Whoever gets Free to Air rights must not get exclusive rights to show State of Origin and Grand Final live!
Foxtel and other streaming services should be able to show all games live as well.
Many people in regional areas have poor Free to Air coverage and rely on Foxtel satellite coverage for television.
Nine’s coverage of rugby league has been very poor in last few years, way below Foxtels!

  4. The AFL will have the final say on what happens They will tell 7 what they want and how they want it and that will end any further speculation The AFL tells 7 what they will do with football rights not the other way around

    1. afl don’t own seven anyway if afl had there way they have every free to air channel in this country its about time someone took nrl off nine

    2. Doubtful as the reality is not much would change anyway in regards to those two codes and they’d compete for eyeballs in much the same way as they do now.

NRL would be on 7MateHD in non-NRL States as it is now on 9GEMHD and AFL would be on 7MateHD as it is now in non-AFL States, rather than NSW and Queensland having Better Homes And Gardens on7HD it would be the NRL instead. That would be the major change though if that one NRL Game was a Friday, at I guess Better Homes And Gardens would then move to 7TWO like it is this week for the Paralympics.

If it is a Saturday Game Seven are after all that would mean is in NSW and Queensland instead of a Border Patrol repeat being on 7HD the NRL would be, as again the AFL is on 7MateHD as is now in those States.

      1. Apart from AFL rating mostly in the top 10 and NRL in the lower reaches of the top 20, Ch7 would want to keep them happy – maybe they will make sure they don’t clash.

  5. Personally I would like to see the NRL on 10.. 7 just need to watch out they don’t lose the AFL, I can see 9 gunning for the rights if they lose the NRL.

  6. If Nine loses that, they are gonna be interesting on how they keep going well as Seven is going to keep plundering shows, talent, ideas..etc from Nine…

Since the Packers left Nine…it ain’t the same

    Stokes is gonna win

    1. Don’t channel 9 have the last rights clause or something like that.I wonder if 9 will pass this on or only stay with a few games a week once Ray Warren retires ,that leaves Ray a year left with them , well if he does retire.
