Under Investigation: Aug 30

John Howard, who was in Washington DC at the time of the 9 / 11 attacks, participates in Liz Hayes' discussion.

Former PM John Howard features (remotely) in Monday’s Under Investigation who was in Washington DC at the time of the 9 / 11 attacks.

Twenty years ago this September, nineteen young men brought the most heavily armed nation on Earth to its knees.

The men, carrying only pocket-knives, hijacked four passenger jets and on live television, flew them into the twin towers of the 110-story World Trade Center in Manhattan, and the Pentagon in Washington – the home of the US military.

On that terrible morning nearly 3000 people died, more than the Pearl Harbour attack in World War 2, including hundreds of first responders who entered the skyscrapers attempting to save lives.

On September 11 the world learned the awful power of a new form of warfare: terror.

Twenty years later we investigate the legacy of 9/11 – and the subsequent War on Terror, including the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan that cost thousands of lives and became the longest ever engagement for Australian forces.

Under Investigation brings together the Sydney man who survived the falling towers, the Australian Prime Minister who was in Washington at the time of the attacks, as well as experts on politics, counterterrorism, and conspiracies.

We also speak with those who refuse to believe official reports on the attacks, those who sifted through rubble to explain the collapse of the World Trade Center, and the man charged with heading the Australian security response.

8:40pm Monday on Nine.
