Vale: Reg Gorman

Veteran actor, best known for The Sullivans and Neighbours, has died.

Veteran actor Reg Gorman, best known for The Sullivans and Neighbours, has died aged 89.

His agent Joanna Milosz confirmed on social media, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Reg Gorman, absolute legend of the Australian performing arts. True gentleman, a kind, gentle, generous man. He will be greatly missed.”

Gorman was often described as one of Australia’s last vaudeville actors, and enjoyed a prolific career on stage, radio and screen.

His TV career began with Consider Your Verdict in 1964 before his first recurring star role in Mrs. Finnegan in 1970.

But it was in The Sullivans as benevolent barman Jack Fletcher that he became best known, appearing across its entire run from 1976–1983 run.

His other TV credits included Riptide, Division 4, Boney, Spyforce, Rush, Homicide, Matlock Police, Prisoner, The Henderson Kids, Neighbours, Snowy River: The McGregor Saga, The Wayne Manifesto, Something in the Air, I Can Jump Puddles, Carson’s Law, All the Rivers Run, Special Squad, State Coroner, Blue Heelers, The Pacific, Woodley, and as Harry Patterson in all 26 episodes of Fergus McPhail.

His film credits included Ned Kelly, Between Wars, Alvin Rides Again, The Big Steal, The Craic, Dalkeith, The Drifting Avenger, Animals, You and Your Stupid Mate, The Cup and more.

Gorman was also a regular performer in theatre, particularly Melbourne’ theatre restaurant scene where he performed with Tikki & John Newman.

He was also a regular voice in Radio drama plays, and he appeared in one I wrote for ABC many moons ago…

Reg was married to fellow actor Judith Roberts, both parents to Kate, Karl and Charmaine Gorman, and grandparents to Olivia Deeble.

Vale, Reg.

  1. Gawd, I remember Reg with much affection and fondness as Constable Tizzy, Rod Hull as Constable Clod, Geoff Harvey as another constable and Desmond Tester as the Villain/Mad Bomber in 9’s Kaper Kops, a part of Desmond and the Channel Ninepins (Sydney) afternoon kids TV @ 1960-ish.
We’ve lost a lot of Aussie TV talent over the past four weeks.

  2. Many, many moons ago, I saw him & many others at Tiki and John’s.
    They were all so talented.
I really enjoyed Reg in theatre and tv. “The Sullivans” was a favourite.
Sincere condolence’s to his family, friends and fans.
Thanks Reg for sharing your wonderful talent with us.

  3. Oh no, first Brian Henderson now Reg Gorman.
Shame Neighbours isn’t on tonight, I guess will have to wait till Monday for a tribute if they do one.
