Vale: Sean Lock

British comedian, best known for 8 Out Of 10 Cats, has died.

British comedian Sean Lock, best known for 8 Out Of 10 Cats, has died aged 58.

“It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Sean Lock,” his agent said in a statement.

“He died at home from cancer, surrounded by his family.

“Sean was one of Britain’s finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy.

“Sean was also a cherished husband and father to three children. Sean will be sorely missed by all that knew him. We kindly request that the privacy of his family and children is respected at this difficult time.”

Known for his deadpan style, Lock was a team captain on UK panel show 8 Out Of 10 Cats and spin-off 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

He also wrote and starred in the sitcom 15 Storeys High.

Jimmy Carr tweeted: “Brutal news about Sean Lock today. I loved him. I’m watching clips of him right now – laughing & crying. I’ll miss him so much.”

QI star Alan Davies tweeted: “Sad news about Sean Lock. Funny on stage, hilarious off. We met in 1988 right at the start of our stand up careers. I hadn’t seen him in recent years as he quietly wrestled with illness but I feel very sad today for Anoushka and their children. RIP Locky.”

Comedian Jon Richardson, wrote: “I idolised Sean as a comic long before I became a comedian myself and ten years working alongside him didn’t diminish that in the least. An incredible comic brain and a truly unique voice.

“I’m devastated for his family today and sad for comedy that we have lost one of the very best. Undisputed, undefeated, carrot in a box champion. I will miss him.”

Ross Noble added, “With the passing of Sean Lock we have lost the best of the best. He made me laugh like few others do. A massive talent who made stand up look effortless and approached his illness in the same no nonsense way he approached life. A great loss.”

  1. I don’t think I can watch Cats Does Countdown for the next little while. Watching some of the repeats and having relatives who have gone a similar way … yeah it makes sense now. I know the word ‘gutted’ has been used a lot in the last 24 hours , but it feels the only appropriate word. He genuinely was one of my all-time favourite comedians and panellists. You know if you can reduce your colleagues to tears as a comedian, as Sean often did, you’re a talent indeed. He’ll be very much missed in this house.

    1. So agree, I watch an episode of 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown just about everyday somewhere on TV. I never knew of him before the show. It is so shocking and sad and yes hard to watch him on the show now and wonder what they’ll do going forward as I was so looking forward to the next season.

  2. Sean Lock was really one of the best and a huge loss to Cats does Countdown.

I hope that if Cats does Countdown continues there will just be guest captains each week. No one really can or should replace Sean.

Channel 4 Youtube channel has a best of Sean Lock playlist. I’ve seen all the videos before but I’m going to rewatch them all tonight.

I think there should be a video in this article. Channel 4 Youtube has A Tribute To Sean Lock with some of his best stuff.

  3. This is very sad. Like Nick I was unexpectedly rattled when I read this. Love …Cats does Countdown, the banter and chemistry between the teams and hosts is among the best of TV.

  4. This news hit surprisingly hard this morning. Wasn’t expecting it. I always thought there were shades of Letterman about him. British tv won’t be the same.

  5. Sad to hear about the loss of Sean Lock . He was great on the 8 out of 10 Cats shows, and his other appearances on panel shows too. So funny. May he Rest In Peace.
