Logie Awards cancelled a second time

Logies are postponed a second time -and the knock-on effect sees shows miss out altogether.

TV Week has announced the Logie Awards have been postponed for a second time due to the ongoing COVID crisis.

The 2020 awards were originally cancelled with a reschedule date of November 28 on the Gold Coast.

Fiona Connolly, Group Publisher, Are Media said: “We are disappointed to have to cancel this year’s TV Week Logie Awards after charging ahead with plans to return for a bigger than ever event on the Gold Coast this November. Unfortunately, our current COVID cases and travel restrictions leave us no choice.  But we will return to Queensland mid 2022 and promise the TV Week Logie Awards will bring an overdue and deserved night of glamour, celebration and recognition of Australia’s outstanding television industry.”

With the Awards postponed last year and cancelled this year the eligibility period for the 2022 TV Week Logie Awards will be from 1st January, 2021 through to 31st March, 2022.

Last held in mid 2019, this effectively sees a backlog of potential nominees across 2019 and 2020 now historically removed from eligibility.

A date for a 2022 event will be confirmed later.

Meanwhile the Screen Forever conference, also to be held in November at The Star on the Gold Coast was also pushed back to late March 2022.

Should the Logies have held a virtual event to award 2019 / 2020 shows?

  1. I hope that this will give the AACTA Awards a boost later in the year (if Seven airs any of the awards, unlike last year….). Or even better, boosts the TVTonight Awards 😛

  2. Even without the glitz and glamour of the actual award show, they should have still gone ahead with the voting and announcing a list of winners to the press as it’s important for recognition received from the voters. Then they could mail out the Logies to the winners.

  3. Disappointed you failed to mention Tom Gleeson will have held the Gold Logie for three years running. Something which didn’t escape his attention (refer his Twitter).

      1. TV week may get a boost but would Nine, QLD tourism would not spend the money for virtual event nor would the ratings reflect what is needed for the cost of the event, TV week could still run a voting and announce in there own online awards however without that ad rev and sponsorship across 3+ hours of TV revenue it’s not worth the expense for the network or magazine

  4. There’s no excuse that they can come up with to not hold it virtually.
Every little award show in the UK was able to, so surely TVweek could pull off a zoom cross.
Pretty much saying it’s not about the award recognition at all.
If I was the networks, I’d be threatening a boycott from future Logies.

  5. Shows how behind the times Australia is….whats new though we always are so far behind the rest of the world. Should be a virtual event like others have said. It’s not that hard to do but honestly doesn’t surprise me. I mean voting is done online anyway so whats stopping them? It’s a cop out and shows they really don’t care. Sucks for so many in the industry. Yeah the last ones were terrible honestly but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t recognise the achievements from the past couple of years. They should have done better.

  6. Clearly this is proof that this is just an event to be attended and not for rewarding or recognising work within the industry.

Don’t bother coming back in 2022.

  7. This is a bad decision. Logies organisers have to do everything to recognise people who worked so hard on programs that were broadcast in 2019 and 2020.

I suggest that three TV specials, each 90 minutes long, be done to recognise the programs that were broadcast in 2019, 2020 and 2021 calendar years. The proposed dates will be:
62nd Logie Awards (eligibility: programs shown in 2019 calendar year) – Sunday November 28
63rd Logie Awards (eligibility: programs shown in 2020 calendar year) – February 2022
64th Logie Awards (eligibility: programs shown in 2021 calendar year) – mid or late 2022

For all three specials, only the outstanding categories will be awarded with the winner to be interviewed virtually. No popular awards or Gold Logie. In Memoriam segment will be included.

    1. Love it! I doubt any of the networks – individually or collectively – would be willing to foot the bill, but it would be a nice way to recognise (as opposed to completely overlooking) 2019 and the so-called “Covid era”.

    1. Agree. Maybe it’s all a bit outdated. But it surely wouldn’t have hurt them to either do it virtually, or even just do it with the voting and awards but no event. At least the industry — which, let’s not forget, has managed to soldier on throughout the pandemic, despite restrictions that extended far beyond the ability to stage awards ceremonies — would’ve had the long-standing tradition of the Logie Awards to receive proper acknowledgment for all the hard work during 2019-21.

  8. No surprises there – although I do love Peter Ford’s comment at the end. Yes it is all pomp and a bit of a joke to many, but it’s also much needed work for the entertainment industry — and sucks for those who’ll miss out on eligibility as a result (in order for their work to be recognised).

  9. Such a shame that this years Logies are being cancelled. I do understand why, but surely there are “other ways” that it could have gone ahead. 2019 and 2020 cast and shows snubbed, which is sad. An online event? Something. And start “fresh” in 2022.

Also, the In Memoriam past would be long in 2022. We’ve lost some high profile people recently, including Lorrae Desmond, Brian Henderson and Ernie Sigley, all three former Gold Logie Winners, as well as Dieter Brummer, who was the 1990s Logies pin-up guy.

  10. Wow! The virus is getting out of control. There goes my Logies party as it was going to be a week after my birthday. Not fair it rules out 2019 and 2020 nominees. What about a virtual awards? Tom Gleeson is to blame. Just kidding.
