SBS misses out on Facebook deal

Facebook declined to enter negotiations with SBS despite months of attempts.

SBS has failed to forge a licensing deal with Facebook, despite the social media giant’s deal with other broadcasters including ABC, Seven, Nine and 10.

Despite a deal with Google, SBS said Facebook declined to enter negotiations despite months of attempts.

“This outcome is at odds with the Government’s intention of supporting public interest journalism, and in particular including the public service broadcasters in the Code framework with respect to remuneration,” an SBS spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters.

Facebook’s regional head of news partnerships, Andrew Hunter, said in an August email to publishers it had “now concluded” deals where it would pay Australian companies for content on its just-launched “Facebook News” channel.

He noted content deals were “just one of the ways that Facebook provides support to publishers, and we’ve been having ongoing discussions with publishers about the types of news content that can best deliver value for publishers and for Facebook.”

  1. Yes, this seems really unfair from Facebook…how have they made the decision to “conclude” all negotiations when there are clearly many media firms who haven’t even had the chance to discuss this with them?

  2. From the Facebook comments it seems Facebook does not value news content from SBS.

SBS needs to loudly point out that Facebook wont deal with Australia’s Indigenous Broadcaster.
