Lisa Wilkinson: “No one knew that I had this offer from Channel 10”

Ex-Nine anchor reveals morning wars drama during her time at Today.

Lisa Wilkinson referred to portions of her upcoming book, It Wasn’t Meant To Be Like This, in an interview on The Project last night.

Amongst the topics, host Hamish Macdonald asked about her departure from the Today show in October 2017.

“I was standing in aisle six at Woolies holding a can of tuna,” Wilkinson recalled of hearing the news.

“I felt stupid and humiliated and betrayed and pretty pathetic.”

Macdonald pointed out she was ‘effectively dismissed’ by Nine.

“Yes. But no one knew that I had this offer from Channel 10. I think the idea was to humiliate me because I’d been in negotiations to try and close the gender pay gap.

“It doesn’t get much bigger than the gap that I experienced. I was very expendable. I didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye to your audience. I was told ‘That’s it.”

Wilkinson was also asked if she had a relationship with her former co-host.

“Look, we’re not really in touch,” she revealed, before telling a producer off camera, “I’d rather we didn’t use this, if you don’t mind, because I don’t want to look like I’m… you know …

“But I was hurt,” she continued. “I was hurt. But you pick up and you move on and that’s exactly what I did.”

Her book is out on November 3rd.

  1. A great interview by Hamish and very revealing. Quite often when News and Current affairs shows have weekend versions they use a B team. The Project is great because the have Two A Teams. Lisa is clearly an equal on The Project but you can see the Today Show has Karl as the star.

  2. “But I was hurt,” he continued. “I was hurt. But you pick up and you move on and that’s exactly what I did.”

In a story about Liza Wilkinson wanting equality at Today you refer to her as ‘he’.

  3. Amazing that Lisa would do an interview about herself on her own show because she has a book to sell. I was really quite excited when Lisa joined 10, but unfortunately The Project is a different show when Lisa is on with her pushing her political agenda. A few weeks ago she demanded the then NSW premier resign due to high Covid case numbers (have not heard any such demands from her of late about Victoria’s Premier). Another comment liking the Prime Minister to a fish rotting from the head first after the French Submarine Cancellation. Really? Lisa is not a political journalist. (If I want political opinion I would watch Sky News). The Project is so much better and entertaining without Lisa’s agenda.

    1. I agree, the Labor Lecturing from Lisa does make it hard to watch, it also annoys me no one else on the panel is allowed to question her opinion. She clearly has not moved on from the Today Show – she still lists it first on her Twitter – I’m not sure why she needs to list that occupation she was “pushed” out of so many years ago, and why The Project is not listed first?
