Mark Harmon departs NCIS role

After 18 years he departs but producers add, "Never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”

Reports emerged in the US this week that Mark Harmon’s character Leroy Jethro Gibbs has concluded on NCIS -wrapping an 18 year run.

Just how that played out you can read at Variety if you’re not worried about spoilers.

Executive producer and showrunner Steven D. Binder has left the future ambiguous as to whether or not fans would see Gibbs again, noting that Harmon is executive producer.

“As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the fabric of the show,” Binder said in a statement. “Our North Star has always been staying true to our characters, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go. So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years … never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”

Season 19 introduced new character Special Agent Alden Park (Gary Cole) and new series regular Special Agent Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) who join Sean Murray, Brian Dietzen, Rocky Carroll, David McCallum, Wilmer Valderrama and Diona Reasonover.

Season 19 is currently fast-tracked on Paramount+ and will screen in November on 10.

  1. I have a feeling this might be the final season of NCIS. Gibbs might make a return in the final episodes if they are told early enough it’s getting canceled

  2. Not sure if everyone is up to date with the new cast members. Katrina Law as Special Agent Jessica Knight has joined the team as REACT (Regional Enforcement Action Capabilities Training Team) agent who specializes in hostage negotiations and handles daily high-risk operations. Gary Cole joined as FBI Special Agent Alden Park (from The Good Fight, Veep, The West Wing and Midnight Caller) but he is not going to be replacing Gibbs.

David do you know when new NCIS will air here yet?

  3. Mark has long wanted a holiday. But Covid stopped he and Pam going to Europe. I think he will return at some stage. I have seen bits and pieces of the episode Great Wide Open which is number 4 and its a nice conclusion to how he now finds peace about Shannon and Kelly. NCIS writer Steven Binder said “never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.” I have my hopes on those words. Mark is 70 now, so wanting a break or wanting to change his life has been well earned. He will be sadly missed if this really is his final hooray.

    1. Its still been very good despite having others left. It just takes a little time to get use to the changes which can take a season, not a few episodes. If you judge a loved show on lost characters you really are not giving it a chance when the newcomers fit in very well as the episodes go on. I think anyway.
