Axed: Alan Jones

“SKY News have indicated to me that they will not renew my contract," says Alan Jones, with his final show to screen tonight.

Veteran presenter Alan Jones is departing SKY News after 8 years with his program not renewed by News Corp.

“SKY News have indicated to me that they will not renew my contract, which ends on November 30,” Jones revealed on Facebook.

“At a meeting on Friday, October 29 I wasn’t offered another slot with SKY News, but an alternative offer was made to me to appear once a week on the news streaming service, Flash.

“I declined that offer.”

Jones joined SKY News in 2013 as co-host of political discussion program Richo + Jones, alongside Graham Richardson. He then went on to anchor Jones & Co in 2016 before hosting the Alan Jones program from July 2020.

It’s been a flurry of headlines for the controversial presenter this year, with comments around COVID-19 part of a YouTube ban for the broadcaster, forced to admit a correction by ACMA, and having his column dropped by the Daily Telegraph. Last year he retired from 2GB citing ill health as rumours swirled Nine management were looking for change.

Paul Whittaker, Chief Executive Officer of SKY News Australia said: “Regrettably Alan has decided not to accept a new role that was offered to him for next year. We respect his decision and know he will be missed by many.”

His final program will air tonight, Thursday 4 November, at 8pm.

  1. Sad news, but he will easily find a new role elsewhere. He is too good to be ignored, Sky News’s loss is another one’s gain.!
I definetely think he will return to 2GB & will do either the Afternoon Show or the Drive Time Show replacing Jim Wilson. If he gets the Afternoon Show then Deborah Knight will move to the Drive Time Slot. Well that’s what I would definetely do.!

  2. Reading this article I would say that Alan Jones was determined to sack himself. I’m sure Alan could find another media gig but he does have his health to think about.

  3. Alan Jones in his statement claimed his show won the 8pm time slot, can we fact check this because last time I checked his show only achieves a national audience of 65,000

    1. Last night Gogglebox won the timeslot on STV at 156,000 in overnight numbers. On the date his statement refers to (Oct 28) he led the slot in STV at 63,000. But you would also read in another article today how News and Sport usually float to the top of overnight numbers, much like FTA, while the drama and entertainment is generally timeshifted / BVOD later.

  4. This is a sad day for me, an avid Sky News watcher. I really do hope SKY news isn’t going all woke and politically correct (similar to SKY News UK), otherwise, I will be saying bye, bye to my Foxtel subscription…

  5. I’m all up for difference of opinion, and enjoy listening to others on each side. Yet, the times I turn over and have seen such anger with someone reading out such a angry essay on covid isn’t appealing to me.
