US actor Eddie Mekka, best known for Laverne & Shirley, has died aged 69.
He died on Saturday at his home in California, although no cause of death was given, except that he “passed away peacefully.”
Mekka played Carmine “The Big Ragoo” Ragusa in the sitcom from 1976 to 1983. During its run, Laverne & Shirley was the most-watched show on US television, reaching a high of 23 million households.
His other credits included The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Family Matters, Guiding Light, 24, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and two Laverne & Shirley TV specials.
Cindy Williams, who played Shirley, paid tribute on social media along with Michael McKean.
My darling Eddie,
A world-class talent who could do it all. I love you dearly. I'll miss you so much. But oh the marvelous memories…https://t.co/ZmBFpBxc4m #EddieMekka— Cindy Williams (@Cindy_Williams1) December 2, 2021
A sad goodbye to Eddie Mekka this morning. A genuinely good guy and purveyor of cheer whenever things got cheerless. Value these people. RIP, Eddie.

“You know I’d go from rags to riches . . .”
Ah yeah very appropriate 😞RIP
One of my all time favorite shows. Of the main characters that now leaves just Shirley and Lenny.
