Airdate: Great Escapes with Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman explores real-life prison breaks that have captured the attention of the public.

US doco series Great Escapes with Morgan Freeman begins tomorrow on SBS.

This is an eight-part series hosted and executive produced by Morgan Freeman.

In the series, Morgan will explore real-life prison breaks that have captured the attention of the public. It’s an up close and personal view of what the prisoners are faced with in executing their break outs. Famous escapes from Alcatraz, Dannemora, Pittsburgh State Penitentiary and other locations are recreated with actors playing KEY roles and interviews from some of the prisoners themselves, their families, their cell mates and from the guards and prison employees that tried to prevent the escapes. Along with the interviews and recreations, the series will utilises new software technology called Unreal Engine to recreate – with great verisimilitude – the prisons themselves.

Episode One: Alcatraz
Four men conspire to break out of one of the most notorious prisons in American history. Three make it to the water’s edge, but what happened to them when they left the island remains a mystery to this day.

Saturday, 8 January at 7.35pm on SBS.

  1. Can’t say I’m particularly interested in common criminal escapes from prison-not the sort of people you’d be rooting for at all. The Alcatraz attempt made perhaps the most interesting ep of ‘Mythbusters’ though but as they themselves said, the fact that career criminals were never heard from again said it all about whether the attempt failed or not.

    1. I’ll agree also , the MythBusters episode wasn’t bad but like everything time will have caught up with those who escaped. One man said he was one of them but I don’t think ever came forward so either some or all drowned or lived their lives like the rest of society did.
