Mike Whitney yesterday presented his final episode of travel show Sydney Weekender, retiring after 27 years.
Whitney first appeared on Sydney Weekender in 1994 after a career in international cricket.
“Twenty-seven years! To do anything for that long is a very long time. I had the best hosting job in Australia. I got to travel everywhere in NSW, meet the most amazing people, and do the most amazing things. People pay to do the stuff that I got paid to do. I’m very grateful that I got the opportunity to work on this show,” he said.
“People ask me if I’m going to miss it. Sure, I am going to miss it. It feels a bit surreal. But I had an incredible cricket career as well and I had to retire from that. And who gets to retire twice from two wonderful careers?”
He is replaced by Seven News sports presenter, Matt Shirvington.
“Taking over from a TV legend like Mike Whitney, who’s graced our Sunday afternoons showing us around our beautiful state for more than two decades, is a huge responsibility. Mike leaves some very big shoes to fill. I feel honoured and excited to be given the chance,” said Shirvington.

Am I wrong in thinking that at some point last year 7 announced the scrapping of all Capital city ‘Weekenders’.
What happened??
You ask a fair question. Seven did indeed axe multiple travel shows in 2019, but after a backlash, including from advertisers, they relented on several. A few did not come back.
Time to do ‘Me’ stuff, Mike….Thank you for all the enjoyment you have given in both careers.👌
A good career, well done Mike
Mike Whitney made that show,he will be missed.
A great career and a great role model. Let’s not forget Who Dares Wins (the 90s show and not the SAS show) and Gladiators.
Sad to see Mike Whitney leave the show after 27 years.
