Returning: Celebrity Letters & Numbers

New season guests include Susie Youssef, Aaron Chen, Bob Downe, Mark Humphries on SBS.

Season two of Celebrity Letters & Numbers premieres on SBS in early March.

Michael Hing returns with Lily Serna and David Astle for 12 new episodes. The new season will include Merrick Watts, Ben Law, Tanya Hennessy, Akmal Saleh, Susie Youssef, Aaron Chen, Bob Downe, Mark Humphries and more.

Host Michael Hing said: “In a world where modern television is an increasingly drug-fuelled haze of sex and madness, it is truly incredible that SBS has seen fit to bring back our Letters & Numbers show for a second season. Will this season be sexier? I’ll be there, so probably not, but it will have all the cognitive break downs, scholarly mishaps, and occasional triumphs that you’ve come to know and love, plus, actual answers from Lily and David.”

SBS Head of Entertainment, Emily Griggs said: “After a successful first season and return of Celebrity Letters & Numbers, we’re so pleased to be announcing the show’s second season. Bringing viewers shows that educate and entertain is something that we strive to do at SBS and Celebrity Letters & Numbers truly brings this to life in humorous quiz form. We can’t wait for Aussies to enjoy even more comedic personalities lined up for our second season.”

ITV Studios Australia’s Head of Entertainment, Majella Wiemers said: “We are incredibly thrilled to bring a second season of Celebrity Letters & Numbers to SBS audiences. It has proven to be a winning formula with its combination of smarts, wit and comedic relief from the everyday grind. Viewers can sit back and enjoy or interact and play along with some notably familiar faces on screen.”

Produced by ITV Studios Australia, the celebrity adaptation of the popular series Letters & Numbers follows a similar format with guests fighting for the top prize, only this time with a comedic twist. Each week, three courageous and comedic celebrities and a special guest will join David in Dictionary Corner.

With twelve, hour-long episodes airing over the span of the season, the quiz show boggles even the sharpest of minds in a quick succession of high-pressure letters, numbers and conundrum games. As time ticks away, each game sees the contestants scramble to beat the clock, proving the simplest of tasks overwhelmingly challenging. Only one celebrity will prevail and take home the grand prize and glory of being Australia’s Celebrity Letters & Numbers champion.

Celebrity Letters & Numbers is produced by ITV Studios Australia.

7:30pm Saturday 5 March on SBS.

  1. It would be nice to have new episodes with non-celebrities, though it was seen last season that celebrities like Susie Youssef are very intelligent and could give the non-celebrity L&N contestants a run for their Macquarie Dictionary.

  2. “And more” doesn’t fill me with any confidence when all of the listed “celebs” (minus Law) have already been on the show.

Sadly, the last season was a real stinker, though I assume that both were shot back-to-back (hence the return guests?). Incidentally, Youssef was still promoting “Making It” even though it was axed quite some time prior to the CL&N episode airing (one would think that the editors would have excised this bit of footage in order to make the show appear more timely).

I will tune in again for David Astle and Lily Serna, but I am still not sold on the lax application of the rules (and the fact that underperforming contestants are awarded points). The fact that the guests seem to walk on eggshells in order to avoid running foul of the unseen arbiters of good taste coupled with the forced “uproarious” laughter considering how painfully unfunny the show is never fails to make me cringe, but dammit, the things I do for you, David and Lily…

    1. I agree Hank. Initially I thought it was good and then as the weeks went by it got boring with the same celebrity contestants. Give us no-names any day and I’m sure the ratings will come.

  3. Any word on a weeknightly season of non-celebrities? Watching the celebrity version last year made me yearn for the original half hour format with contestants who were actually above average at letters and numbers.
