They’re off! MAFS then Australian Survivor, The Voice.

Viewers were torn by three Reality offerings, but Married at First Sight came out on top as the unofficial TV year begins.

It’s the unofficial start of the TV year and first victory goes to Nine.

While the official ratings season doesn’t start until Sunday, networks rolled out their big guns last night.

Married At First Sight topped entertainment with 869,000 metro viewers, beating out the return of Australian Survivor (608,000) and The Voice: Generations (529,000) in Overnights.

With three major shows on offer it’s clear the audience was torn.

MAFS was down on 2021’s premiere of 964,000 as was Australian Survivor (2021:  752,000). If compared to its main event, The Voice took the biggest hit when the 2021 series debuted to a huge 1.41m out of the Olympics. Seven’s 3 night event concludes before the Winter Olympics takes over from Friday.

Nine won the night at 32.0% then Seven 25.6% and 10 19.2%.

That said, Free to Air is always healthier when there are three tempting offers on choice rather than one dominant and two in a world of pain. Let the, umm, games begin?

  1. You know considering channel 9 had 4m+ viewers over the last few nights I’d say MAFS is a fail even if it did win the slot. You’d think 1.4-1.5m+ With all that promotion even in this tv climate.
Voice generations was good and honestly those saying it’s overkill I disagree. It’s a filler program before the main show return later in the year around July/August. I will say I thought it would get a bit higher too but it is what it is. Seven have Winter Olympics for the next few weeks starting Friday so they were limited in what they could show. Survivor was good last night too. 2 hours may seem long but I’m used to it.

  2. Good to see survivor come 2nd I thought for sure it would be MAFS the voice then survivor MAFS and the voice doesn’t interest me and i will binge watch survivor on Friday night like I did last year if it’s anything like it was last year then it will be fantastic

  3. I watched the voice gens last night. I thought it was very good and I agree with most of the people here that if this show was more than 3 episodes it was going to overkill the brand and it will risk the main season when
it airs later this year so it is good to have 3 episodes instead of lots of episodes of the voice gens.

  4. I don’t see how three episodes of a The Voice spin off is over kill. The main series will be much later in the year so there’s a decent break.

  5. I didn’t watch any of the reality offerings last night, at 2 hours long I find them far to drawn out & struggle to commit to them so I don’t bother getting invested.
I really wish they would keep these shows to just one hour.
I was watching Morning Wars on AppleTV+ instead, have been meaning to watch it for ages, fantastic series, quality drama!

    1. I had exactly the same thoughts as you, 2 hours is too long, one hour is perfect. I started my trial with AppleTV+, which is what I’ll be watching each week for the foreseeable future.

    1. People always whine about stripped reality tv shows! I find it odd. Don’t like it, don’t watch it; or if you like it, record it and ffd through the ads, or watch on slight delay as you suggested. I hate sport, but don’t go on posts about the golf or the tennis, etc, and complain about sport being aired. I’m so happy Aus Survivor is back on, three hour eps would be fine with me! Also enjoyed the stripped back/pandemic-affected weddings of MAFS, surprisingly.

  6. Sadly neither of the 3 reality shows were tempting, we watched the streamers instead. As they all pretty much recorded the lowest premieres of all 3 franchises, it seems a lot of others weren’t too interested either. (28 day figures to prove me wrong I’m sure!)

All I want is something new to watch, not the same thing year after year.

  7. Appreciation post. Personally, I was delighted with all of Channel Seven’s offerings from 5pm right through to 10:12pm. What a phenomenal episode of The Chase Australia last night, with the remaining three contestants sharing a privileged cash pool of $96,000. Larry Emdur is a gem who can do no wrong. His counterparts at Nine should inspire to be one tenth of his eminence.

  8. MAFS & Survivor Top 2 in all Demos but The Voice nowhere to be seen.. surely the potential risk of overusing The Voice format outweighs the benefits of running it for only a few nights?

  9. Surely 7 would have expected 1m or plus, especially after last year. Even though it’s a spin-off, it was the number 1 show not long ago…..I guess Aus Open have really helped 9.

    1. Bobby, I respectively disagree. I can’t believe 7 would have thought Voice Gen would have attracted 1 mill against MAFS. MAFS is 9s MKR and although I have no interest in MAFS, there’s no denying it’s success. 500+ is respectable but not impressive and presumably will be a little lower tonight. I think Voice Gen was a creative solution to a specific problem. 1 week before Winter Olympics and 7 couldn’t afford to surrender the week.

    1. Agre3. I flicked over from MAFS and saw 3 judges fart arse around on stage doing an impromptu song. But I guess it’s just a 3 night filler what dos 7 care?

  10. Pleased to see survivor in 2nd. Although long winded it was a great first ep. hopefully they throw in more 9pm finishes for future eps. These shows should not go past 9pm its ridiculous.

    1. TV Fanatic,I tend to disagree I have just watched the first episode now and thought it was quite good casting wise and I think it will be another explosive season.

  11. I watched the voice. It’s a 30 minute show much extended. I dont think I’ll be back. Survivor is too much of a commitment for me, It needs to be edited down to a much shorter show. I’m not going to mention the other one, I wouldn’t watch if it was the only one available.

      1. Ditto.. the best way to watch FTA TV.
Iv’e never watched MAFS so recorded 1st 2 eps.. I know its watched by loyal fans, but I got nothing.. Just brain fog
