Outlander prequel in development

Prequel series is said to be in development for hit romantic saga.

Outlander was recently reported as getting a prequel series, currently in development at Starz.

Executive producer and showrunner Matthew B. Roberts is attached to write and executive produce, with a writers’ room to begin in the coming weeks.

But it’s not yet clear what the plot entails (how the stones came about, perhaps?). Ronald D. Moore, who developed Outlander based on Diana Gabaldon novels, will also executive produce.

Season 6 returns to screens at 9pm every Monday on FOX One and will consist of eight episodes.

Season 7, which will consist of 16 episodes, has also been greenlit.

Season six, based on Gabaldon’s book A Breath of Snow and Ashes, picks up where the fifth season left off after Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) had just escaped a violent encounter with Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and returned to Fraser’s Ridge.

Claire and husband Jamie MacKenzie Fraser (Sam Heughan) now strive to maintain peace and flourish within a society which – as Claire knows all too well – is unwittingly marching towards Revolution. They must defend their home – established on land granted to them by the Crown – not only from external forces, but also from the increasing strife and conflict in the community within their care. For the Frasers and their immediate family, “home” is more than simply a site in which they live, it is the place where they are laying the foundations for the rest of their lives.
