EXCLUSIVE:

A decade after hosting Talkin’ ‘Bout You Generation Shaun Micallef’s is heading back to Network 10 to host Shaun Micallef’s Brain Eisteddfod.

The show will see Year 11 high school students testing their academic knowledge in a new quiz, to determine which school has the biggest brains.

Teams will be tested on their foreign language skills, knowledge of Australiana, mathematics, history, physics, art, and more.

Micallef said, “I’ve always believed there was intelligent life on this planet and I am delighted and proud to be part of 10’s efforts to discover it right here in Australia. Also, I was once a year eleven student myself, and will be using my old notes to double-check the answers.”

  1. Daniel Monaghan, 10 in the article titled “Networks hint at what’s to come” from 19/2/22: “I’m hopeful of having someone back on toward the end of the year, that hasn’t been on 10 for a while.”. Is is the answer to that clue, and if it is, well done to Aussiecam58 who guessed Shaun correctly!

  2. I’m so happy that Shaun is still on TV. From Milo to Mad As Hell, he has always delivered. When will one of the channels bring back a variety style show at night? Channel 10 Shaun would be a perfect host. Have to say I miss Andrew Denton’s Interview too, another show that could have been expanded as in Parkinson.
We really need a decent talk/variety concept show back on our TV. Graham, Bert & Don would be turning!

  3. I remember it was said often that Year 11 is the most important year of school in my schooling years. This is the sort of programming that they should have on ABC. Now that there may be funding available, ABC could consider a new channel in the style of ABC’s Open Learning. Education for high schools and beyond with even adult learning included. It’s one of the concepts that would be critical broadcasting. They have experience with the concept.

Also it’s an interesting choice to use the word Eisteddfod as from an Australian perspective, semantically Eisteddfod is more associated with performing arts and theatre.

      1. Of course. I still have DVDs of The Micallef Program and spelling variants. He already has my brain thinking and the show is months away. I agree with greyghost. It does seem like It’s Academic for high schools. Though Micallef’s presence as host would be unique in itself.

        1. Back in the early 2000s, 7 showed a Perth edition of It’s Academic being hosted by Jeff Newman. The Perth edition has a group of Senior High School students trying to answer a lot of questions within the 30 second limit during each round. It was great. But in mid-2005, they moved from localised Perth edition to a national audience. The revamped It’s Academic (hosted by Simon Reeve) contained Sydney-based primary schools answering the questions. Would be great to see more school-based educational quiz shows back on prime-time TV.
