Viewers turn to Seven for Shane Warne Memorial

Nine's odd decision not to screen Shane Warne Memorial on its primary channel sent viewers flocking to Seven.

Nine’s very odd decision not to screen the Shane Warne Memorial on its primary channel around the country was a scheduling blunder, sending viewers to Seven.

829,000 metro viewers viewed the event on Seven.

On Nine, where it largely screened on 9GEM, it drew half the numbers -403,000 across the network.

On ABC News it led multichannels at 163,000 while Network 10 (which also screened on multichannels outside of Melbourne) was just 161,000.

Seven network won Wednesday with 33.2% then Nine 27.8%, ABC 17.6%, 10 14.2% and SBS 7.3%.

Seven News was #1 at 942,000 / 932,000. The Latest, which followed the memorial, was also extremely high at 779,000 in preliminary figures. The Chase was 506,000 / 316,000 and a Warnie special was 292,000.

Nine News drew 821,000 / 812,000. Hot Seat was 399,000 / 243,000 then Travel Guides (365,000). A Current Affair was 357,000 in select cities.

ABC News pulled 536,000 then 7:30 (428,000), Hard Quiz (422,000), Mad as Hell (418,000), Tomorrow Tonight (274,000), Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala (192,000) and The Drum (154,000).

10 News First was 315,000 / 171,000 for 10. The Project was 205,000 / 189,000 in select cities. Ambulance Australia was 220,000 / 178,000.

On SBS it was SBS World News (166,000 / 128,000), Tony Robinson’s Coast to Coast (156,000), Mastermind (76,000), Life on  the Outside (72,000) and The Responder (54,000).

  1. Channel 7 was always going to win, especially in Melbourne. Warne is from Melbourne, he was employed by Seven and cricket commentator since Nine dumped the cricket, the memorial was at The G and Seven could promote their coverage heavily during the AFL. From the data Nine ran the coverage on Nine in Melbourne and on Gem elsewhere. Seven got 295k and Nine 270k in Melbourne. In Sydney Seven got 207k and Nine 31K + 171k for Travel Guides (202k) and promoted that show. In Brisbane Seven got 124K and Nine got 57K + 100k + 157k. Given that Pawn Star and other rubbish on Mate rates approxiamately nothing. Nine won.

  2. The memorial was wonderful. His children spoke so well, Eddie did a great job as MC, the MCG looked great & there were some laughs and tears.
    I watched it through Foxtel.

  3. As much as I don’t watch 9’s coverage, it would have been better that the funeral was put on the primary channel in the eastern states. That way, it would have boosted its ratings further. In Melbourne, they missed out a new episode of Travel Guides. VIC people need to catch up through 9Now. I think Nine could have done better by delaying the first episode of Travel Guides by one week to ensure that all markets can become more consistent in Wed schedules.
    As for 10, they moved the funeral to 10bold and instead 10 ran repeats of Ambulance as filler programs. Look at the network’s shares. Just 14.2% is quite poor. Had they stuck with 10, they would have rated much higher.
    A delayed coverage of the funeral on 7 in QLD, SA and WA is proving to be a joke. A 3-hour delay in WA meant that the Shane Warne’s Funeral was finished live. To have the funeral on a 3-hour delay meant that 7 Perth numbers are much higher than 9GEM due to time difference.

  4. It was a very good, slick production with loads of variety – I especially enjoyed the panel interviews. An event we’ll all remember for a long, long time. I watched on Sky News as it was the only HD live coverage in QLD.

  5. The biggest blunder in my opinion was Sky News coverage of the memorial. Unlike Foxtel, Seven, Nine and 10 their captions were beyond horrible. Shane replaced with ‘Shine’ and ‘China’ multiple times, and when Sir Elton played the captions read ‘blah, blah, blah’. Switched to Seven (and flicked between the other occasionally) and the captions were near perfect.

    As for Nine if they can get 365k eyeballs in front of a program with advertising (as opposed to Seven who forgo 2½ hours of prime advertising revenue), I’d consider they’d be pretty happy.

  6. It was a lovely memorial for Shane Warne, minus some of the crowd behaviour with booing. I watched it with my brother. We’ve known of Warne since childhood and he’s almost like family. We discussed if there was a greater Australian than Warnie, and couldn’t think of anyone greater. There were all these good things he had done that we only found out about last night. He is gone too soon, though it was truly inspirational, a person the children can look up to and be inspired by.

    Speaking of memorials, I’m not sure if Prince Phillip’s memorial was shown live or at all in Australia. It would be unusual for a significant event like that to go without broadcast in Australia. I checked ABC News 24 and Channel 7 at the time on Tuesday but couldn’t find it on Australian free-to-air.

  7. Tony Robinson’s Coast to Coast? I’ve taped this show (not yet seen) and am expecting a new series on the Thames.
    I’ll have to find out what show it is tonight

    1. It was titled as The Thames: Britain’s Greatest River. This was originally a series about travelling from the source to the sea. They now are distributing 4 or 5 different series as different season of one show. SBS gave the synopsis for the first episode of the first one, which was a journey down the Thames from its source to the sea. The 4th one they have already shown as the The Thames At Night. The episode we got the first episode of a 4 part series on redevelopment along The Thames and focused mostly on the Battersea Power Station redevelopment. It was from several years ago, when the bridge illumination project had just started. This is sometime shown with another series making a 9 part series.
