Crowds return to Australian Grand Prix

Record crowds at Albert Park, but down on Free to Air. Seven wins Sunday, SBS up.

After no race for two years the Australian Grand Prix drew record crowds at Albert Park on the weekend.

For Channel 10 the event pulled 534,000 metro viewers  -although that was down on 2019’s 649,000 in overnight numbers. As always there were  another 281,000 national viewers on FOX Sports and 10 has referred to its biggest ever live stream audience on 10 Play (no numbers as yet).

While it did aid 10 News First, at 276,000 (up from 211,000 last Sunday) it didn’t translate for The Sunday Project (322,000 / 219,000) on par with the previous week.

Meanwhile ABC News just won its early slot at 560,000 metro viewers ahead of 60 Minutes (559,000), Border Security (493,000) then Grand Designs NZ (407,000 from 7:40pm), Code 1: Minute by Minute (310,000 from 7:30pm) and The Graham Norton Show (199,000 from 7:30pm).

Later a Janet Jackson doco led at 310,000 ahead of ABC’s Troppo on 219,000.

Seven network won Sunday with 29.3% then Nine 28.4%, ABC 16.4%, 10 15.5% and SBS 10.4%.

This week and next are non-survey weeks for OzTAM but you can check other Overnight data here and Total TV for the previous Sunday here.

  1. I thought it was interesting 10 was promoting the Melbourne cup during the Grand Prix It’s a whole 7 months away. General feeling is 10 will walk away from the Aussie Grand Prix very soon And seven will pick it up.

  2. A missed opportunity to use the Grand Prix to increase 10’s primetime share – perfect night to lauch Masterchef ahead of the competitors’ offerings

Even just a preview show (inculding highlights from the faves’ previous seasons) would have done much better than Graham Norton
