“If they rang up and asked me to do Australian Idol I’d say yes”

Kyle Sandilands throws his hat in the ring for an Idol return.

Kyle Sandilands has again flagged his interest in judging Australian Idol, which is due to be revived by Seven now in 2023.

“If they rang up and asked me to do Australian Idol I’d say yes because it’s fun and easy,” he told Mediaweek.

Add his name to the list alongside Rob Mills, keen to host.

Sandilands, whose production company King Kyle is involved with Luxe Listings Sydney, said his manager no longer approaches him about reality TV appearances.

“I have been asked to go on every show…with the possible exception of Dancing with the Stars,” Sandilands continued.

“Bruno just doesn’t ask me anymore because he knows there is no way I’d do them. I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! is the most persistent and they have offered big money. The show offered me $1m and said I could even smoke if I needed to. I said no way, but Bruno reminded me, ‘That’s a lot of f***ing money.’ It was when they were in Africa, but I knocked it back.”

Well there was The Masked Singer, bro.

And Trial by Kyle, Australia’s Got Talent, The X Factor, Celebrity Big Brother, Meet the Hockers…

  1. I hope he’s a lot more punctual than he was last time. I remember how he slept in on the morning of the Sydney auditions leaving the other two judges to carry on without him. By the time he finally decided to come in, the auditions were over

  2. Given the nostalgia route they’ve gone with DWTS I wouldn’t be surprised if they rely on that for Idol too.

The Voice has been terrible for connecting audiences to the talent which is why around the world it hadn’t created lasting stars in the way Idol and X Factor could.

  3. To each his own and I wouldn’t mind Kyle. There’s a surfeit of other talent with ability to fill the judging panel. In terms of hosting, please no Rob Mills, Luke Jacobz and not the original two hosts. I would love to see James Tobin have a shot as he has fine adlibbing skills and is youthful.

  4. He single-handedly killed my interest in Idol back in the day. Dickson, Hines, and Holden had industry experience and passion for their craft. Kyle merely wants the gig because it’s an “easy” paycheque disproportionate to his experience and (nonexistent?) standing in the music industry. His brand of feedback can be provided by any schmuck plucked off the street and served only to cheapen the brand.

I don’t harbour a blanket dislike for the man and I wish him and his growing family well. I also found his appearance on The Masked Singer last year to be a welcome surprise, but he is not fit to preside as a mentor in these sorts of roles. And I’m also quite fed up with other judges in this genre who have let the fame get to their heads (*cough* certain judges from The Voice).

And considering that we haven’t seen the genre produce a major star in quite some time, is it any wonder that eyeballs have wandered?

    1. I think it’s all going to depend how they do Idol. I think there is a lot of weight to Guy Sebastian’s recent comments about how quickly we move through the modern singing shows. You never get a chance to connect to someone. We used to lose just one person a week. Add auditions and even the old workshops before the live shows and that meant that anyone who was even top 8 or so had sung far more often on camera than even the winner of the Voice. We got to know and properly care about them, not just see a package that was manufactured to try and make us care. And we could go out and buy the album featuring all the songs we’d loved on the show. I firmly believe the lack of stars is less about the genre and more about how networks do it today.
