Janet Fielding reprises Doctor Who companion

Aussie returns to Doctor Who universe for the first time in 4 decades.

Veteran Australian actor Janet Fielding will reprise her role as Doctor Who‘s companion Tegan Jovanka in the Jodie Whittaker’s final adventure.

She will join Ace, played by Sophie Aldred as part of BBC’s 100th celebrations later this year.

‘Tegan Jovanka’, an Australian air stewardess played by Fielding, appeared on the show between 1981 and 1984 as a companion to Tom Baker and Peter Davison’s Doctors.

It will mark the first time she’s been seen on screen performing in almost 40 years.

“In some ways it was a very different experience to what it was like when I finished recording in 1983, but in many ways it was very similar. It was so lovely to be a working member of the Doctor Who family again,” Fielding said of the recent filming.

Ace was in the series from 1987 to 1989 alongside Sylvester McCoy’s seventh Doctor.

Sophie Aldred says: “It’s been quite a challenge to have such a big secret to keep, even from my family, and I couldn’t be more thrilled and excited to have been asked back. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I adored being part of the TARDIS team again.”

A new teaser also revealed that the episode will feature the Doctor’s arch enemy The Master (Sacha Dhawan) and two of her most famous foes, the Daleks and the Cybermen.

Whittaker’s replacement as the Doctor is expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.

  1. David, my proofreader genes can’t let “as part of BBC’s 90th celebrations later this year.” pass. You owe them 10 years.

I’m genuinely shocked (in a nice way) Teagan is back. I can remember these 4th/5th Doctor stories vividly. Watching them (probably) on first-time repeat in the late 80s. I remember not really being able to compute (as a 6/7/8yo) hearing an Australian accent on a British show.

There’s a sadness here that they’re filling the void left by Elisabeth Sladen, but I’m glad Ace is back in the mix. McCoy is “my Doctor” (not that I had much choice in the matter). Rumours were flying the moment she signed on for a Big Finish series.
