Jonathan LaPaglia a fan of Survivor tribal scrambling

"I want to see that scramble. I want to see it fall apart like that," Australian Survivor hosts says of whispering and frantic Tribal scrambling.

In recent Survivor tribal councils, especially in the USA, contestants start whispering to one another, sometimes even getting up from their seats and into huddles.

Jeff Probst has watched on while contestants ignore the Tribal Council format, which frankly frustrates me as a viewer. It hasn’t happened so much in the latest season of Australian Survivor, although Sam did scramble on the night she was eliminated (and Chrissy & Josh were scrambling last night).

Personally, I reckon the time for scrambling is before Tribal, and then I’d love to watch as best laid plans fall apart. It feels to me like a host losing control of their show.

“Much to your disappointment I’m on the side of Jeff on that one,” Jonathan La Paglia told TV Tonight.

“I love when it becomes ‘live’ like that, because otherwise it’s kind mechanical. It’s me asking questions and getting answers, which is great -but if it becomes ‘live’ like that, that means that the conflict has boiled over, to the point where people can’t even focus anymore. They need to get up and start changing plans.

“As a viewer, that’s what I want to see. I want to see that scramble. I want to see it fall apart like that. It’s one thing to have a plan but to me, it’s much more exciting when it becomes ‘live.’

“Because of our questioning their plan falls apart, so I want to see that. I want to see where it will land.”

There’s one more Tribal tonight, with just 4 contestants remaining, so it will be unlikely. I think.

“It happens a lot more in the US now and maybe that’s because the game is 41 seasons in. But personally, I love that. If that happens, I think, ‘Hey my job is done.’ I can just sit back and watch it unfold.”

  1. Its good but not every time. I quit surviving 2 weeks ago and happy I did the comments from viewers are generally all negative. 10 have ruined it for me. Just like BB too many twists and stupid saves. Plus this years cast are terrible players IMO!

  2. “Do not visit TV Tonight till you’ve watched the finale.

Me, bored 20 minutes into the finale: Opens tvtonight.com.au

Poor season, but no surprise when they bring back such forgettable members of the alumni and build episodes around them. Anyone but Gronk to win tonight.

  3. Survivor Australia has been totally destroyed by the return of 3 contestants who had been voted off., when only a few contestants remained. Made a complete mockery of everything that happened over the previous weeks and totally changed the games outcome. Scrambling at tribal just makes it more interesting!

    1. Agreed. It’s unfair when the players have schemed and planned to vote someone out only to be told “oh they’re not really going”. The winner last year was a second-chancer.
Not a fan of the whispering at Tribal but I’ll get used to it.

  4. I hate it, especially when it interferes with the proper tribal conversation and the person talking cant focus.
It was once amusing when it happened once a season and really meant there was drama unfolding, but now that it is standard, its just annoying.
