Airdate: D.I. Ray

Critically-acclaimed UK crime thriller is written by a Line of Duty writer.

Critically-acclaimed UK crime thriller D.I. Ray is coming to SBS in June.

The 4 part series created by Maya Sondhi (Line of Duty) and produced by Jed Mercurio stars Parminder Nagra (The Blacklist) as newly-promoted Detective Inspector Rachita Ray, assigned to a homicide case that forces her to face a lifelong personal conflict.

It also features Gemma Whelan and Jamie Bamber. This debuted in the UK last week.

Set in Birmingham, DI Ray introduces us to Leicester-born Rachita Ray (Parminder Nagra), a police officer who takes on a case that forces her to confront a lifelong personal conflict between her British identity and her South Asian heritage. Rachita achieves the promotion she has been waiting for when she is asked to join a homicide investigation. However, on her first day she is told the murder to which she has been assigned is a ‘Culturally Specific Homicide.’ Rachita’s heart sinks – she suspects she is a ‘token appointment’, chosen for her ethnicity rather than her ability.

9.30pm Thursday 9 June on SBS.

  1. Mercurio has started churning out stuff that he isn’t writing. Trigger Point was awful even though it had Vicky McLure as the lead, D.I. Ray is mediocre, Bloodlands was a bit better, largely due to Nesbitt, and got renewed for a second season. Part of Peak TV.
