Retirement village for Bendigo Street site
The former home of GTV9 Richmond is taking shape as a retirement village.

Retirement home stories on A Current Affair are usually the subject of failures of care, and aggrieved residents but last week ACA profiled plans for a retirement village at the former home of GTV9 in Bendigo Street Richmond (aka Television City).
The name of the complex, Ardency Kennedy Place, is a nod to Graham Kennedy and a 30-seat cinema will be named the (Bert) Newton Theatre.
An eighth-floor bar with a grand piano is in homage to its origins as a Wertheim piano factory.

I bet that will be a lot more expensive than the retiirement village I live in.
Surprised 9 didn’t turn it into a retiree version of The Block.
… now there’s an idea David, a series of stories about what happened to old television stations … for example, both Prime Wagga and Albury became churches and Prime Wollongong is now a Bunnings … they make transportable buildings in what was the studio of SEQ 8 and both SAS10 and ADS 7 in Adelaide (which became SAS 7 and ADS 10) are now townhouses … of course elsewhere, the grandaddy of them all, BBC Television Centre, is now mostly very expensive apartments as is the former home of the Benny Hill and Kenny Everett Shows, Teddington Studios … “and the ghosts may be heard …”
There’s a lot on TV history in the archive already, including old broadcasting sites.
22 Bendigo Street’s redevelopment must be a rare example where such development has at least nodded to its heritage. Most other old TV studios just get replaced by soulless apartments, etc. I imagine once Neighbours vacates the Nunawading studios that the building and grounds will be sold off and subdivided. It would be nice to see it turned into some sort of TV museum, though.
There’s a heritage overlay on the original ATV0 building which won an architectural award in its heyday.
I remember it won the award the year it was built, but I wasn’t aware (or had forgotten) of the heritage underlay on it.
