Tiny Oz: May 3

ABC recreates an event which enthralled and scandalised the people of Adelaide in the late 1800s.

The final episode of Tiny Oz looks to Adelaide in the late 1800s for a hot air balloon across Adelaide.

Hosts Jimmy Rees and JoAnne Bouzianis-Sellick take us for a ride back in time and space, to an event which enthralled and scandalised the people of Adelaide in the late 1800s: The first human flight – via hot air balloon.

Adelaide was a very new British colony when, in the late 1800s, crowds gathered in the Botanic Gardens for the 19th Century version of man landing on the moon. Before their eyes, a massive calico balloon inflated and lifted its basket of daredevils into the sky. Hanging below the balloon scantily clad trapeze artists spun on a swing before dropping back to earth with the aid of a parachute.

These dangerous stunts drew a carnival and a crowd – all of which, on land and in air, are recreated for us in glorious miniature. This model tells the story of pioneering women who risked their lives to entertain audiences and rebuilds the built environment of a very young European settlement.

Celebrating local artisans, regional history, and community ties, we experience Adelaide from a whole new perspective.

8:30pm tonight on ABC.
